Canada parliament votes for committee to probe China relations in defeat for Trudeau

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian legislators on Tuesday delivered Prime Minister Justin Trudeau his first parliamentary defeat since his re-election by approving the creation of a special committee to examine relations with China, which is locked in a dispute with Ottawa.

 

Trudeau's Liberals lost their parliamentary majority in an October election. He must now rely on opposition legislators to govern.

 

Canada-China ties turned icy a year ago after Vancouver police detained Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. arrest warrant.

 

Shortly afterwards, China picked up two Canadian citizens who now face state security charges, and it also blocked imports of canola seed.

 

The right-leaning Conservative Party, which accuses Trudeau of being too soft with China, proposed setting up the 12-person committee, which will conduct hearings to review all aspects of Canada's relations with China. It is due to meet for the first time on Jan 20.

 

"This committee will help shed light on Justin Trudeau's failures to stand up for Canadian interests with respect to Beijing," Conservative foreign affairs spokesman Erin O'Toole said in a statement.

 

Trudeau has stressed the need not to escalate the dispute with China. The Liberals said existing committees already deal with the China relationship.

 

The Conservatives say Trudeau should scrap a C$250 million ($188 million) investment in the Chinese-owned Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

 

They also oppose the use of Huawei technology for construction of an ultra-fast 5G wireless network.

 

Legislators voted by 171 to 148 to create the committee. Trudeau's office was not immediately available for comment.

Canada has problems as the vassal of the US. Meng should never have been arrested. It did not take a rocket scientist or a biblical prophet to see what would happen when they arrested her. The charges of breaking US sanctions on Iran by a woman living in China is nonsense and an example of US extra-territorial judicial grabs. Canada should have ignored the call. Look what happened to the Brits with the piratical arrest of an Iranian tanker. They ended up looking as stupid as Canada looks and it is pretty obvious by the way Trump leave this allies dangling in the wind that there is no back-up for them when they do his illegal bidding.

The point is, Trudeau (and his woke government of 2015-19) is/are/was/were incompetent.

The arrest of the Huawei heiress could have been easily avoided by simply informing her, before she even left China, that it would be inadvisable to land in Vancouver.  Trudeau's weird hag of a Foreign Minister failed utterly to anticipate that Canada did not need to get involved with the American obsession with extraditing her for her Iran sins.

If you read carefully, she was wanted for securities fraud because she lied to Huawei investors about the company's exposure to sanctions, and the effect it would have on the value of their investment.

As an American I know very little about this. which is why I am reading this thread. You said:

   How would her being a woman and or living in China would have prevented her for Breaking sanctions on Iran, making the arrest warrant "nonsense" ?

100% agree. Trudeau's big mistake was in appointing an incompetent attorney general. She was central to both the Chinese woman's arrest and criminal charges laid against SNC Lavalin. To his credit he booted her.
