Yes, they abandoned me. I was a nurse for 26 years and during that time I learned a lot about human nature and psychology, so I don't ascribe such terms casually without knowing what they mean.

Interestingly, my first partner was also abandoned by her mother and step father as soon as she moved in with me and they didn't have to look after her any more- she was disabled. They too moved to the other side of the planet. Her father and step mother didn't abandon her physically, ie they were still in the same city, but they might as well have, for all they cared about her.

You are confusing now with then. Back then once children left school they got a job and their own place. They didn't live with mummy for years like they do now. No one went on the dole either. We grew up expecting to work for a living, not sponging off other people like kids do now.
