Looking for household Ammonia for cleaning windows.  I have never found in Tesco Lotus, Big C, or Maakro.  Is it available in Thailand or is it banned for some reason?

Good place for cleaning supplies is in Homepro, good selection of HG Brand products.

I have found Chang beer to be a good substitute for ammonia.

I've lived in Thailand for more than 15 years. Never seen ammonia here.

If it's really for cleaning windows, a bit of white vinegar in a gallon of water does the trick.

Don't you have to convert it in the liver first?

I have bought some from a pharmacy, but for some reason it was mixed with alcohol.

I've seen liter bottles of it for sale in the stores that sell fragrance products.  The one in Udon sells a variety of OTOP type cleaning products as well.  If I remember correctly, about 80baht for a bottle

Heaven Forbid if they ever banned nail polish remover then... 

Ammonia can be used for the production of explosives as can acetone (nail polish remover). People might get suspicious about request for such chemicals, and quite rightly.

 

I would find something else to clean your windows with to be honest!

Agree, I can recommend my wife? I did buy here a Karcher window cleaning thingy, kind hearted soul that I am ???? 

We buy ammonia at a local chemical supply shop here in Ban Chang as well as acetone and some other hard to find items. Must be a shop similar in Patters

Try some Lao Khao.  Just don't spill it on any painted surfaces.  ????

 

 

Concentrated ammonia (eg 25% w/v content as in Australia's "Cloudy Ammonia") for unregistered use is illegal in Thailand. The following is the government's website but of course it's in Thai.

Essentially, high concentration ammonia is a class 2 prohibited chemical. It is designated as a chemical required for processing cocain. Ammonia in pharmacies/comestic are regarded as too weak for illegal use. However concentrated ammonia is readily available and is cheap (about 70 baht per litre) but possession and its use needs to be registered with the local police.

If ammonia is accidentally mixed with bleach, it creates toxic chlorine gas. Most people in Western countries are aware of this fact and take the necessary precautions to keep the two substances separate. For Thailand, Ammonia Hydroxide - the active component of Cloudy Ammonia (or Sudsy Ammonia), is a class 2 regulated substance, as one of its use is in cocaine extraction. Possession and use needs appropriate government registration. The attached Thai government narcotics control website states that - maximum penalty of unauthorized possession is 1 yr prison and/or 100,000 baht fine.

May be this is why it’s not seen in shopping malls. Purchases of concentrated Ammonia Hydroxide can also be made online with courier deliveries from ligitimate chemical suppliers, 3 of which are given below. The liquid can then be further diluted with water (from 27% to 2%) and detergent added so as to get a Cloudy Ammonia like solution.

I can buy ammonia in 70% solution and have it cut down o any percent I want at a local shop here in Ban Chang. Only question from seller is how much do I want and what % do I want. No registration or any other info needed just Thai baht.
