technically your DVD player should not play a US  region locked DVD  but many times  there is a "secret" code to enter with the remote control rhat allows bypassing of  the lock...most no name players will play anything..many brand name players make it difficult.

Most newer DVD players will play all zones of DVDs but Blurays are generally locked (though some have option of hardware or firmware kits that unlock BD playback as well). That likely excludes Sony - most of their DVD players are zone locked.

Pioneer and Oppo, and most of Panasonic and Philips DVD/Bluray players have been DVD zone free for a decade, regardless of what was printed at the back. Even Sony Bluray players have no zone control of DVDs.

So - if buying a DVD player, avoid Sony. If buying Bluray player, pretty much each one of them will play all zones of DVDs.

If you have a PC with a DVD read/write drive simply copy it. The region information will not be copied.

True, but unless using AnyDVD or similar, the DVD drive inside PC also has a zone and will lock after 5 changes.

You don't play the DVD but copy the data.

That's worth a try. Though if he went to Kaidee and bought pretty much any used DVD player (or one that he has at home) there's 99% chance not to be zone locked... unless it's a Sony.

The DVD could be copy protected. But there is always a way...

And you are right. There are many DVD players that don't care about a Region Code. And today they cost next to nothing.
