HORRIFYING photos show the disgusting conditions inside a Thai slaughterhouse – where pigs are clubbed to death and butchered in front of their offspring.

 

The gruesome shots show innocent pigs being beaten and having their throats slit before being lined up for slaughter.

The sickening pictures were captured by Jo-Anne McArthur, photojournalist and founder of We Animals Media, which is dedicated to ending animal cruelty via storytelling and journalism.

 

In the horrible photos, pigs can be seen beaten repeatedly with wooden clubs with their throats slit open.

 

She spent several hours exploring the Thai slaughterhouse, located just a few hours from Bangkok, after being invited to look around the abattoir.

Rather grotesque...  The Vegans are going to love this and I kind of agree with them. 

 

Humane, instant and painless slaughter is the only civilised manner in which to slaughter animals we require for our dietary requirements. 

 

Of course, meat as a dietary requirement is debatable, the same people wishing to hold this debate will be crying out cruelty towards insects in 50-100 years time when insects become a major part of our diet. 

 

I like meat, I enjoy eating it, I consider it an essential part of my diet, I like beer and wine too and it could be argued I can do without those as they are not essential parts of my diet. With that said, I would like to enjoy meat without the associated cruelty towards these animals.

So why are there no inspections of these slaughterhouses? Or more to the point, why are the rules ignored for death factories that are obviously as filthy and inhumane as shown in these pictures and why are they not closed down if they fail to clean up their acts?

 

Well, we all know why, as a list of the actual owners or operators of these places is very likely to contain very interesting names.

 

And in the end it's all about money (as usual). Killing pigs in a humane way would require investing in appropriate equipment and facilities. A wooden club costs practically nothing.

 

The compassion Buddhists allegedly have towards all living things is sadly missing from these horrifying images, too. In fact, I have always been shocked with how much brutality animals are generally treated in this oh so Buddhist country.

 

I am not saying that an entire nation must stop eating meat. What I am saying is that a nation that prides itself in being Buddhist should show more respect for the animals that are sustaining them and accord them the dignity to die with as little suffering as possible when the time comes.

 

It would've been interesting if the article's author had confronted the butchers and asked how they reconcile their actions with their Buddhist religion and what ludicrous excuses they have conjured. We all know the rather cynical local saying "I didn't kill the fish. I merely took it out of the water and it died by itself."

Seen this in my wife's village with a pig being killed for a funeral celebration. Lots of people standing around watching including children. Most seemed to think it was quite normal.

All slaughterhouses are horrible.  The lion strangling the antelope is horrible. The white shark eviscerating the baby seal is horrible. The wasp larvae eating its host from the inside out is horrible. Getting blowed up by an IED is horrible. 

 

Life can be horrible, but thats life.

Where do you think that nice sealed piece of tenderloin you see in the supermarket comes from?

I'm a big fan of displaying the slaughter of the animal on full display behind a glass wall just behind the meat section of the supermarket.

See how many people buy a piece of meat then?

Agreed, life is horrible, but with the exception of the IED all your examples are of animals without concept of consciousness or conscience. We on the other hand (humanity) are aware of ourselves, pain and pain which we inflict on others, in this case unnecessarily - The slaughter of these animals could be made far more humane, i.e. less painful and stressful for the animals, it wouldn’t hurt or harm us to do so. 

 

Life can be horrible, but that’s not our life, we don’t need to be.

Wait till you witness defenseless grapes getting mercilessly stomped by  aggressive bare feet in an escape proof barrel! Horrific!

The sight of Barley being harvested was a particularly harrowing experience...  I had to go and hug a tree just to get over myself. 

 

 

The same still applies though - there is no need for this level of barbarity, animals can be slaughtered more humanely.

Bwana McArthur has a point. She has revealed a cruel and a detestable way to carry on things. But her self righteous posing won't help. Stanley, Livingstone, Speke, Baker, and even Burton opposed slavery but realized they had to make some accommodations, at least at the beginning, with the Arab slave traders to advance towards their final goal. People used to know how to work to achieve moral aims. Now they just use it as an issue to pound the heads of their adversaries.

Shall we also discuss kosher and halal methods of killing animals? Didn't Denmark ban that a few years ago?

Suggest you go watch a few You Tube videos of how animals are treated and slaughtered in UK or American / 1st work countries.  Not than different really.

One reason I do not eat pork, lamb or beef, is that I do not want to consume anything I would not be willing to kill myself. And those are three animals I would not be comfortable slaughtering. You can make many arguments about the humanity of the methods, in which you take an animals life. But, you are responsible for that life being taken, by consuming their flesh. It is really that simple.

I would, I understand things must die for me to eat them. 

 

There is a more humane manner in which it could happen, and I would prefer that, but its not going to stop me.

 

That said I predominately eat chicken, but the horror there is more how it is raised than how it is brought to market, ie slaughtered.
