Koh Tao, mainland to be linked by submarine electric cables

The Cabinet has agreed to the Interior Ministry’s proposal to link Koh Tao to the mainland with submarine electrical cables at a cost of Bt1.76 billion.

 

Prime Minister’s Office spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said today (February 18) that Bt444 million would be paid to the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), which would be responsible for installing the submarine power cables.

 

The PEA was allowed to take out a Bt1.33-billion loan to develop the project but also has to manage coral reefs during the process, according to a resolution by the Cabinet in 1992 to preserve the marine ecosystem.

 

The project to extend the capacity of electricity on Koh Tao will support higher demand as it is an important tourist attraction with the potential to expand economically.

 

One set of 33KV power cables will run from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao, a distance of 45 circuit kilometres, and the power supply system will have a distance of 21km with two automatic voltage regulators.

For that it would be necessary to start to clean "the trash island" of the mountain of waste which is hidden towards its center.
Once that was done, "we" could install a solar power plant;
but in the island of corruption, the first thing to do would be to put in prison those who keep it in slavery in their large well pointed greenhouses.
So not tomorrow the day before ..
And then, this is only a proposal in order to know what percentage can be put in his deep pockets ...

I think you have failed to take into consideration the kickbacks that will drastically reduce the 1.76.

Must start big even to buy 2 reels of Bell wire.

The article says that the cable shall run from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao. Koh Phangan is already connected to the mainland with the newer submarine power cable running from the mainland to Koh Samui, via Phangan – the older submarine power cables run straight to Samui. That cable has actually worked very well. It was produced in Norway – you don't have that size of bell-wire in long length as stock product – and installed by an international team.

Well, one possibility is when a cruise ship anchor to a submarine cable, it happened with the new cable between maninland and Phangan-Samui, but it didn't completely cut the supply, and the damage were fixed without too much disturbance, I believe on the cruise ship owner's expense...

Not a lot. It's not like it will be the first underwater feeder in Thailand.

So the submarines will come in handy to supply the submarine electrical cables for this project, might be a bit paang though!

The trash mountain is all but gone, they've been clearing it pretty much daily since last year, shame they can't arrange the same for samui or phangan

The cable is likely good for 15-20MW max, so if you “island” Koh Tao you would need the equivalent of about 9-10 shipping container sized batteries like a Tesla MegaPack to match the capacity.  You would also likely want to get a new wind turbine up and running on the island good for about 1MW.

 

But, the smarter move would be to do the submarine cable and add 2-4 5MW offshore wind turbines between the islands along the route.  And, if you really care about the environment, at the same time extend PEA lines to all the spots still running their own generators 24x7.

I read some years ago that a major problem with wind mills in Thailand is that it's either to little wind, or the wind is too strong. Still only a few test wind turbines in action, to my knowledge.

 

Furthermore "en route" is a marine park where they will not be allowed to raise 5MW wind turbines, if any.

 

Using the power source from the mainland makes sense.

Not all of it is, but added habitat for nesting... Also help to discourage the fishermen who are dredge-netting in the park...

 

As for wind speed, up at 2-300m it should be more consistent; on land is pretty hard to make work without an ideally sited turbine on a tall tower.
