Charging too much for protective facemasks – or hiding the price – has resulted in the arrest of 115 vendors, Commerce Ministry permanent secretary Boonyarit Kalayanamit said on Wednesday (March 11).

“Eighty offenders were arrested in Bangkok and the rest upcountry,” he reported. “Ten were arrested for charging more than the controlled price, 29 for not displaying the price and 76 for charging a high rate.”

Sixteen of the offenders operated online.

All were charged with violating the Price of Goods and Services Act.

Any convicted of overpricing could face a fine of up to Bt100,000 and imprisonment for up to five years.

Those convicted of hiding the price could be fined Bt10,000. Those demanding a high rate can be fined Bt140,000 and jailed for up to seven years.

Again with the masks, and the hand sanitizer.

Sheesh.

100% of the "authorities'" efforts should be focused on dealing with the actual threat.

It's like a building is on fire and most Thai officials seem to be scurrying around looking for someone "hoarding" water.

Put the fire out.

Good, these masked need to be offered at controlled rates. Price gouging not permitted. I hope the Deputy Minister was included in the charge list.

He gets a free pass, above the law.

What is the difference between these two?

What is the maximum price for which they may be sold? And to which type of masks does this price apply?

Lol yea arrest the poor vendors who probably also had to buy them at inflated prices to begin with.
They are just getting rid of the competition.

What about the manufacturers how much will they get fined?
Now there's no facemasks at all for sale where are they?

I agree with you. I saw a vendor selling masks for 100 Baht each. I have seen these elsewhere for 50 baht. This poor guy had about 30 masks. He's hardly going to make a fortune out of that.

And how about the price for one corona test. Bangkok Hospital want charge 25000 Baht. This corresponds to a monthly wage for many Thais. Is that the right price?

I read in other Countries from much more lower prices.
