Thirty horses die suddenly, cause unknown

The Thailand Equestrian Federation is urging horse fanciers to not transport any animals after 30 died in the Northeast on Thursday (March 26), the cause or causes undetermined.

 

Ten horses had severe seizures before dying and the rest repeatedly bucked and jumped before collapsing dead.

 

 

Veterinarians are performing autopsies to try and discover what happened.

 

The federation is concerned that a shared disease could be the cause.

 

It has asked the Department of Livestock Development and other government agencies to look into the matter.

Following the deaths of 30 horses in the Northeast region on Thursday (March 26), the Department of Livestock Development conducted an investigation and learned that the horses had had fevers, snots and breathing difficulties, but no signs of Covid-19 infection.

 

The animals also presented subconjunctival hemorrhage, fatigue and swollen faces which are symptoms of the African horse disease.

 

The department ordered horse farm owners to quarantine them to prevent the disease from spreading and confirmed that it poses no danger to humans.

My best guess is West Nile disease ....  very contagious in horses.

 

Infection with deadly West Nile disease is most common in the late summer or early fall in the northeast and Mid Atlantic regions when mosquitoes are rampant. The insects become vectors for the virus when they take a blood meal from an infected bird. They then transmit the disease when they move on to the next host.

Not all animals exposed to West Nile become ill, but horses seem to be especially susceptible. The virus affects the central nervous system causing encephalitis – inflammation of the brain.

Signs of West Nile:

loss of appetite

depression

fever

weakness or paralysis of hind limbs

impaired vision

head pressing

convulsions (seizures)

inability to swallow

walking in circles

hyperexcitability

coma

Hendra virus does not usually cause seizures or rampant bucking and distemper.

That is why I suspect West nile disease

In all my years of riding, transporting, and owning horses I have never heard of any disease effecting so many equines so quickly.  Pending a definitive cause via an autopsy my guess is some man made poison or incorrectly administered medicine was the cause

 

I had a mare die of Eastern Equine Encephalitis 14 years ago and although the symptoms described in the Thailand incident are similar, the speed of infection was much different, almost three weeks from onset of symptoms to death.  And even with a herd of 5 other horses, only one caught it

 

If it does turn out to be some exotic equine disease, a quick death was welcome, since there is no more pitiful creature that a sick horse.  Breaks you heart to watch them suffer and helpless to do anything, other than call the vet for euthanasia meds
