Three Police and Immigration Visits in Surin Normal??? Are 60 + year olds not allowed to leave the house?

An older friend who lives in Surin province has told me that he had the police and Immigration at his place three times in a short period.

He's told that all foreigners over 60 are NOT allowed to leave the house. His neighbors might think that he's a criminal, and that makes him pretty much upset.

I do not understand why they would visit somebody three times and always copy his documents????

Is it true that people over 60 are not allowed to leave their houses?? I thought that somebody told him some wrong information.

Thanks a lot for any useful information, I'll forward them ASAP>

        Kind regards,

You should ask Ubonjoe , specialist about visas on this forum .
For my part, the only thing I know is that it is recommended for the elderly, so no mention of age, to avoid going out of their homes.
Once again an excess of zeal on the part of the Immigration Police in Samui;
we already knew that they demand 5,000 baht instead of the 1,900 baht for each extension of an annual visa.
One day, really, Mr. Prayuth should come and give a big kick in this mafia anthill.

Thanks, I truly hope that Idefix is well! He was told that 60 + year olds are NOT allowed to leave their houses.

  That's a bit different to a recommendation.

He's a bright guy, not suffering of Alzheimer's.

I haven't seen cops, but they have my fingerprints and I'm holding a work permit, which might make the difference?

P.S. If that's true with the 5 K, the cops must be involved. They run the islands.

I'm very sorry to hear that.

Time to inform the government, isn't there a hotline???

I think your friend has misunderstood. He might have been advised to stay hope but not ordered.

If it were true the falang tom tom drums would be booming already and windows would be breaking up and down the country.

He's not the type of guy who misunderstands things.

He was a journalist before.

But everything is possible.

You do know that Samui is in a different part of the country than Surin?

As for the 5000 Baht for an annual extension, how strange that nobody has posted this on the forum.

Could it be that you are just talking BS?

Thanks, yes I was talking about the Surin in Isaan, lower northeast.

That wouldn't be unusual.

It's an open secret ;
do you imagine a farang going to file a complaint with the police because he was robbed of 3,100 baht by other police officers? especially in the current political regime of Thailand ....
Are you kidding me

PS It is written Surin and I read Samui ..
will have to change glasses :sorry:

No I don't expect he would go to the police, but I'm 100% sure that if this happened to a TV member it would have been posted on the forum even before he had handed the money to the IMO.

And since you edited your post. The OP says Surin Province

Thanks, but you should post that to make others aware.

I believe you, Samui is run by cops and soldiers. They all want their cut.

Thanks. A lot of bla bla. As usual. I know healthier 70 year olds than some 45 year olds are.

Did anybody else get so many visits from cops and IO in a short period of time?

It' also called harassment when some cars pull up and plenty of them show up at your place and always do the same things.

I personally don't care what the neighbors think, but it can be really nasty in a little village.

They must all think that he'd committed a crime.

You're recycling 'bloke-in-a-pub' nonsense that has long since been superseded. Samui Immigration Office moved to it's current location some 4 years ago & the pratt in question vanished a year or two before that. I have heard very little by way of complaint since they moved.

unfortunately I would be prepared for all sorts of things, prejudice, irrational persecution, unjustified monitoring, etc.  Thai social structure will mean that lower level people will do whatever they think will  make their boss content.  They will not likely be lenient or favorable to a farang, and I would not be surprised to see a great deal of social bad thoughts towards farangs.  Herd mentality has taken stranger forms in the past

I am 72 and live about 2 km from  Surin Immigration. I ride an electric scooter all about and even visit SI. There are holes in his story. Never had any issue with Surin Immigration.

How can something like this come as a surprise to any long-term Farang living in rural Thailand?

The laws and regulations issued by the "Government" in BKK, only serve as "recommendations" to "Local Authorities". It always has been like that. To be "on a good footing" with local Chieftains/Local Power Brokers is the best Insurance to avoid undue harassment by zealous "officials", looking for a victim with a fat wallet.
Otherwise, living in splendid isolation in a 4 mill mansion will inevitably invite uniform-wearing "officials" seeking financial opportunity these days (one way or the other).
Some 20 years ago, a "rich" Farang in rural Thailand was untouchable. Times have changed.

I remember reading something about 60+ must stay at home. But not sure it was advice or an instruction.

I'm in two week lockdown purely based on the fact I went to Suvarnabhumi. Went to fly out, but flight was cancelled, so returned home.

I gave up trying to explain that because I visited the airport doesn't mean I just arrived in the country.

Immigration also visited to make sure the white man is in lock down.

I'm not really blaming Thailand or immigration. This is new territory for all countries.

The guy lives in an old shaggy house. Many thanks to his game and drug addicted wife.
