Chiang Mai governor orders alcohol ban

noalc.jpg

Chiang Mai’s provincial governor has ordered a ban on the sale of alcohol in a bid to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Late on Tuesday, provincial governor Charoenrit Sanguansat, announced that the sale of alcohol would be banned throughout the province from 10th to 20 April.

The order applies to all retailers and wholesalers and liquor and alcoholic beverages of all kinds.

Any person who violates the order faces hefty fines and possible imprisonment.

They don’t use matches they use sticks...

most of the farmers are smokers so they use lighters....don’t know what the hill tribe violators use but probably lighters...

the big companies growing corn use blow torches...I don’t know know why no one talks about them...oh wait, maybe too well-connected to local gov officials...

Stand by for the stampede to the shops. Will make the queues at immigration look like nothing.

Don't worry

 Tomorrow they will ban breathing.

For the health of the people.

Again, punishing the masses for the idiocy of the few. I get it, some droogs will drink then break quarantine. They are the few. The rest of us who cope by soaking up some suds then posting ridiculous stuff on ThaiVisa? We know, once again, they haven't thought this through. And do they REALLY believe this will stop the mom and pop stores?

well this is another dose of epic stupidity

Another case of stupid politicians passing stupid laws. A few years ago an STR worker was was convicted of murder for raping and killing a girl on a train. Result politicians banned alcohol on trains for everybody.

A school I worked at had a similarly stupid reaction. Two students got caught making "the beast with two backs" in the bathroom. The school admin's response? Lock all the bathrooms at lunch time.

Good call! As days all blur, one into another, I hadn't thought about Songkran (which is just a time for me to hidey hole in my condo any more).

Just when you think they have done stupid things they go and up dumb themselves.

For the life of me can see no reason for this at all and it is more likely to create problems than solve any especially with so many of the locals under so much pressure now.

As rickthailand pointed out: Songkran

Diabolical

Petty politicians throwing their weight around to no good effect.

Utter waste of oxygen.

It will slow them down and before it is over stop many.   Usually these stop selling periods are a day or two.  Mom and pop stores can stock enough for a day or two.  This deal is 10 days and it is unlikely that many mom and pop stores have enough foresight and working capital to sufficiently stock up.

This latest decree by the Governor of Lip Service for Chiang Mai will be as ineffective as all his other rhetoric's, namely the control on burning.

All the so called leaders trying to get their 5 minutes of fame by making bolder and dumber declarations

Thats what my wife says, Thai's wont behave themselves and will still celebrate songkran and drink

Maybe this has something to do with all of those curfew violators, many of whom confessed that they were drinking with friends and lost track of time.

Regardless, I'm pretty well stocked up for weeks.  The new rule says no sale, but nothing about consumption.  So yea, there will be a huge run the next couple of days.

We are in lockdown here in Oz and after years as a teacher in C Mai, I am home-schooling our daughter. By comparison with LOS, we have it great with pure, clean, air. I am not a great fan of our PM, but he has shown himself to be well up to the task in leading Oz during a wartime situation. No alcohol ban here - that would only cause WW4. I am stocked up anyway - just came back from the supermarket in our little country town (I was one of very few wearing a mask) with 2 cartons of my favourite beer (Tooheys) - 30 cans to a box, cost about 1000 baht in total. It's actually on special ! The big surprise (still no toilet paper after six weeks) was they got a load of tins of mushy peas (from the UK) and are knocking them out at 30 baht ($1.50 Oz) a tin. Locals here don't know what they are ! Wifey was happy - only 5 Thais in this town so the asian food section was chockers and I got all the things she needed. They are talking here that this lockdown could go on longer than six months. Hope not ...

Hope you have some proper fish and chips and/or Pork pies for those mushy peas ????

Have to disagree on the description of wartime situation, its not even close. If it was, you wouldnt be out buying loads of ale on rations ????

The one constant you can rely on in a crisis is the ministry of stupid making things worse ????

Ban alcoholic during certain times of the day, ban it on trains because a railway employee commited a crime, ban it during pandemic , ban it on public holidays ... Why not just make Thailand an alcohol free zone 24/7 and get it done with !

It to stop social gatherings.its obvious.

You are not going to see a bunch of people sat around sharing a bottle of fanta are you.????

Let's have a peek inside the sainted Governor's huge mansion... probably has a cellar stacked to the rafters with "beverages" ????

As some have already pointed out it's most probably to do with Songkran and to help curb social gatherings especially during their holiday season.

And besides it's just 10 days.

Seriously, what a whiney bunch of alcoholics. If you can't go without a drink for that long then you still have 2 days to stockup.

Songkran is for 3 days, this ban is for 10, why not just crack down on the few who can't stick to the rules ?
