Drought leaves Phrae fish farms gasping for life

Fish on farms across Phrae are being killed off as drought tightens its grip on the northern province. Water levels are sinking fast in agricultural ponds in the northern province, depriving fish of oxygen.

 

Wittaya Takam, one of the fish farmers affected, said on Wednesday (April 15) that his revenue had sunk after he was forced to lower the price of his fish from Bt120-Bt150 per kilogram to Bt100 due to the combined impact of drought and the virus epidemic. Both are hitting fish farming in the northern province hard, he said.

 

Farmers unable to harvest the dead and dying fish quickly from their evaporating ponds are having to sell the fish at Bt80 a kilo, before they rot and become worthless.

 

Meanwhile, the drought is set to worsen after the local authority announced it was cutting the water released from Matang Reservoir from 40 percent to 20 percent of normal volume until Friday (April 17). Farmers have been warned to make preparations for fish stocks that might be killed off another drop in oxygen levels.

I am happy i did not took power of this country 5 years ago... Sure it would have paid out nicely during that time, but the problems are now just piling up and I would be starting to worry about my future and making escape plans for when the inevitable comes.

They are selling dead bloated fish ? Boy, that's put me right of Thai fish for now

They could put a Bore and pump in . They should aerate the ponds with Motorised peddles . But what do I know, This is what people doing in AUS. when it gets Hot and Dry.

100 baht a kilo? Very few freshwater fish in Thailand have even a retail price of 100 baht a kilo. I think he is inflating the value of his fish in the hope of getting a subsudy .....

 

My family sell fish, retail, we sell at 60 baht a kilo, or less.
