rooster59
Bangkok booze ban: Extension decision Monday Image: Daily News Daily News reported that top level officials at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration debated extending the city's alcohol ban at a meeting in Phra Nakhon district on Friday. The meeting was chaired by governor Gen Aswin Kwanmuang. Thailand's capital has a ban on the sale of alcohol from the 10th of April to the 20th meaning that the ban would finish on Monday. A decision is expected then about whether to extend the ban. Daily News did not speculate as to what that decision might be. Meanwhile mobile SWAB testing uncovered three new cases. They'll no doubt have to 'test' all the different brands to check if they're compliant. Just a precautionary measure of course. Plus a buffet to soak up the alcohol. 2
keithet
Are Thailand's Governors elected or put in position? A few days ago I remember reading about Phuket's governor going to be repositioned to another province. Which seems unfair to the people in the other province because their governer will be all pissy.
Popular Post Thunder26
Of course, the ban will be extended for whatever stupid reasons they come up. It might be the reduction in road fatalities, but this is largely due to the lockdown and less cars on the road. Nothing to do with the alcohol ban. Or they believe people will socialize less due to the ban. But the lockdown closed all the bars and pubs anyway. Those people who want to drink find a way and buy their booze illegally so half of the added tax is not going to be cashed by the government. (They are in the loss) What is wrong with people having a drink with their dinner? It's like an islamic state now. I've never despised a Thai government to this level.

'Those people who want to drink find a way and buy their booze illegally.' Agreed. Perhaps it's a chance for the government to attempt to take the moral high ground. Then when there are traffic deaths and diseases reported due to illegal alcohol, the government can hold their hands up, blaming the 'irresponsible'. 'It's like an islamic state now.' Perhaps pork will be off the menu soon too? 2

khunken
We'll see if the ban was just a measure to contribute to the Songkran clamp-down or a rather more insideous ban on alcohol generally. Hoping it is the former but expecting it is the latter. 1
Popular Post dekestone
Just how long do you think the Sirivadhanabhakdi family (4th richest in Thailand, distributors of Chang, Mekhong and Sangsom) and Bhirombakdi Family (Boonrawd Brewery, Singha Corp.) will put up with this? jimmjam
It will be extended to the 30th, if not all the provinces will look daft, as bkk is the epicentre for the covid outbreak.????
Popular Post Thailand
OK The odds are 10 to 1 on they will extend to 30th. No odds available for removing the ban. The odds on another governor seeing the 30th April and raising to the 10th May are at 3-1 on. The odds on each governor following and raising that governor are- well you know where we are going. 1 1

Most of them have little to no connection with the provinces they're assigned to govern. It's a travesty that Thai people cannot elect the governors making consequential decisions for their provinces. Normally the only exception is Bangkok, which for some reason is allowed to elect its governor. But the current Bangkok governor was appointed after the last coup so he was not elected either. Bangkok is supposed to hold an election for governor later this year.
Popular Post robertson468
I believe that this has nothing to do with the Virus. It is people who have been given power and think that they know better than anyone else and inflict their autocratic rules on others. It's called POWER! The consumption of alcohol is not illegal, therefore the purchase of it is not illegal. A case of Govenors et al abusing their power and denying citizens their human rights. 6
