Covid-19: Foreigners stepping up to help stricken Thais

MCOT reported that foreigners and their Thai friends were doing great work in Chiang Mai to alleviate the hardship caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

They said that a group of foreigners and Thais outside a shop near the Chang Pheuak gate had been handing out 300 - 400 ready meals and drinks per day.

There were temperature checks and sanitizer gels and children and adults were waiting in line 2 meters apart.

The local authority and the police were there to help, making sure that the regulations were followed.

In another location on the Loi Kroh Road a foreign restaurant owner with a Thai wife was handing out meals and fruit juice. Social distancing measures were also in place there.

Thais are also doing their bit.

Professors at Chiang Mai University led by Phisit Nasee handed out 200 baht donations to migrant workers after they held a collection.

I hope Khun Anutin takes note of this sort of thing, which is going on around the country. Us wicked, unwashed farang are stepping in when his government is too incompetent to do so.

Finally, foreigners get praise in the press. It was time. Many foreigner restaurants and bar owners, as well as individuals has been doing this for days already.

This is only the 2nd report I see in the news.

Well done all.

He will have held those views about foreigners for a long time.

Nothing will change that in the foreseeable future

My wife has fed 27 families enough food for 2-3 weeks in Issan this last week. Planning on doing the same again for 40 families before she returns home to USA in June. Money coming from local friends here in USA just a little bit to help how we can

I'm helping by purchasing all the excess beer stocks from locals/shops who need cash quickly!

Kudos to you. Its nice to see some humanity instead of some on here thinking the economy is number one and old people arent worth the effort to save.

Nice to see that they also followed the rules about social distancing and get helped by the authorities for a safe transaction like this one.

Good job to all.

Kudos to these guys who are putting themselves out, to help those in need. They will never get credit from racist creeps like Anutin. Nor would that small hearted man use any of his own rather substantial fortune - Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul Bhumjaithai party leader, deputy prime minister and public health minister, has 4.249 billion baht (his assets include two planes, two motor boats, 24 Buddha images worth 121 million baht and 395 million baht in bank deposits), to aid those in need. It would never have even occurred to him.

And that's only what he has declared.

Why haven't CP company gone out nationwide in trucks handing out free 'food'?

I know it's mechanically separated regurgitated slop but it beats starvation

I haven't seen one of the uber rich help out yet, and you would know because they would make sure every man and his dog knew about it

Though the average Thai will go on and on and on about how much he loves his nation, and how proud of his nation he is, when it comes to the rich and the powerful here, it is astonishing how little they are willing to step up to help their less fortunate countrymen, in a time of great need. All talk, and no action makes Somchai a very small man indeed. And I include many of the government ministers and army generals in this, as some of them are worth a fortune. Just a tiny portion of those fortunes would make a huge difference for tens of millions here, who are just trying to get by, and unable to work due to this insane economic shutdown. I have been saying this all along. I expect the shutdown to be 200 times worse than the effects of Covid itself, when this is all over.

The lines of desperate people queing for any morsel of food/cash is pitiful for a wealthy country.

Living in a village community one can see that poverty is a gradient, at the top are the ones who can buy street food, beer and lottery tickets, even pay the rent. At the bottom end they squat dwell in empty houses with a cable to a street lamp, get everything on credit and move on when credit runs dry. Yet strangely even the poorest seem to own a truck.

I think their excuse would be "We are just following the rule of law and observing the curfew by staying home, and social distancing ourselves from everyone to help stop the spread." Yup, that is how much they 'love' Thailand and their 'countrymen'.

funny but the majority of them appear to belong to Palang Pracharat  or Bhumjaithai that are part of Prayut's gang

@spidermike007 kind of curious to know why my post is sad by your standards, can you, please, explain what's sad about it, thanks

Please don't confuse regular Thai people with those who run the country. They are different species.

if they would let me travel to Thailand I am prepared to get my SETV and stay for 60 then 30 days with an extension for a long vacation.  But no way to meet any of the insurance stuff or get certificates, and things scheduled at the same time to synch up with my travel

In other news foreigners on Samui, who handed out rice to migrant workers, were asked by the police to apologise for damaging the reputation of Thailand

We should give them nothing.

They will one day come around and arrest anyone who's doing any work. I don't think most of the posters here realise just how malicious the Thais are when it comes to their laws, regulations and catching out the foreigners.

Do not get your name or photo in any newspaper under any circumstances - this alone triggers an investigation by some desk jockey, they will investigate you for any tiny infraction including the work permit issue and we all know that volunteers are not allowed to do anything without a WP.
