Sontirat orders probe into Bt150,000 vegetable carts ordered by Egat

Energy Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong ordered a probe into the purchase of overpriced vegetable carts under the ‘Supply and Construction of 500/230 kV(GIS)’ project after activist Srisuwan Janya displayed an invoice for Bt150,000 each.

 

Srisuwan produced the purchase document of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) that stated the high price of the cart. He added that such a cart should cost around Bt2,000 if bought at the local market. He added that this was one of the problems swept under the rug and the state enterprise was using the national budget to pamper its employees.

 

The minister said that he would set up a committee to investigate the matter which would take around two weeks.

That is not going to happen. Srisuwan is not a true activist. He is a serial complainer and mostly about those in the opposition so he is tolerated. However, there is no denying that from time to time he does raise something that is genuine and worthwhile pursuing.

It's the sheer neck they have to ask 150k for a bit of yellow painted bent tubing and supermarket trolley wheels that I admire .. You'd be hard pressed keeping a straight face even sending the invoice in the post ..

Lucky for Thailand there was a coup and corruption has been stamped out and everything is roses now.

 

By the way,that's not yellow paint. Those carts are gold plated.

And that, as they say, is the rub. Even with a case of such blatant corruption as this, it will either be swamped with bureaucratic inertia, or used as an opportunity to steal even more money, Whichever route is taken, or perhaps even a combination, it will be simply another exercise in utterly blatant corruption. These people are utterly shameless. The motivation is always not how can we stop this from happening again, and bring the perpetrators to justice, but how can we ensure we get (or increase) our share.

Apart from the corruption,that is a very poor design if used  to carry vegetables,this is the type I used as a lad

working in Newcastle wholesale market, the Thai design you will be lucky to get a bag of carrots on it.

It's not supposed to be functional. Just a product to allow money to be skimmed.

If functional, it would surely cost 10 times that amount in Thailand allowing for commissions and suitable inclusions for the brown envelopes.
