PHUKET: The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a heavy weather warning for Phuket and the rest of the upper Andaman coast as Tropical Cyclone Storm “Amphan” in the Bay of Bengal gains speed and heads towards Bangladesh.

The TMD reported that at 4am today (May 19), Amphan was centred at 15.2 degrees north, latitude 86.6 degrees east with maximum sustained winds of about 220km/h.

The storm is moving north-northeast at a speed of about 15km/h. It is expected to make landfall in upper India and Bangladesh, noted the TMD warning, issued by TMD Director-General Gp Capt Somsak Khaosuwan.

Not much rain for Phuket as the cyclone moves north.

The weather warning might be more appropriate for Dhaka. They'll be surfing down the delta in a few days.

I am also puzzled why this would be a specific threat for Phuket?

Phuket is about the most distant place in Thailand from the path?

Good luck to the poor in India and Bangladesh.

Reports say it is equivalent to a category 5 hurricane!

Quite a heavy swell at Kata beach today.  Tide level higher than normal.

Re the tide, that's the new moon coming. It'll get higher until Tuesday and the general sea-level on the west coast is always higher in the SW monsoon, which has just begun too. They may as well open the beaches now as they're empty at this time of year anyway and we could at least walk and swim. Or surf.

Good glassy 3' to 5 'smashable wave at southern end of Surin today but unable to go it and ride it ... Damned restrictions!
