Half blind grandad gets 20 baht for doing chores in the village to support his family

Thai media went to a village in Kabinburi, Prachinburi after reports that a blind man was doing work for 20 baht a time.

 

They met Manee Thong-Ek, 67, who said that her husband Sawaeng, 63, was out on a job pulling up some weeds for a neighbor. 

 

He had popped out on his bicycle.

 

They found Sawaeng - blind in his left eye - 200 meters away working with his bare hands. 

 

He confirmed that he would do jobs for 20 or 30 baht to make ends meet though sometimes he got 100 to 200 baht for a few hours labor.

 

He said he was a hard working kind of guy who didn't want to sit about doing nothing all day.

Back at home it was discovered that the couple have three children. The eldest two had moved away.

 

The youngest - 32 year old Janjira - had stopped working because she was  8 months pregnant and due to deliver at the end of June. 

 

She also had a seven year old child and her husband had abandoned her.

 

The couple -both of whom have suffered broken left arms according to the media - receive meager disability handouts.

 

A member of the family said they were not the poorest but if anyone wanted to help they could call 080-160-1914 for details.

 

Local organisations have come to the aid of the family with various donations.

 And why don't local government agencies (there many of them) spend part of their time searching out families in need and doing something constructive to get them help.?

Beats the 10 cents I got for 8 hours hard graft once in Calif, but wait folks ! don,t send money, just tell me the whereabouts of a good dumpster ????

Why is this such a newsworthy story?  Has the reporter never been out of Bangkok?  This is typical in most small towns around Thailand.

The reporters readers may not have been out of bangkok.
