Trump threatens to shutter social media companies after Twitter warning

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to regulate or shut down social media companies, one day after Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) for the first time added a warning to some of his tweets prompting readers to fact check the president’s claims.

 

Trump, without offering any evidence, reiterated his accusations of political bias by such technology platforms, tweeting: “Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen.”

 

He added: “Clean up your act, NOW!!!!”

 

Representatives for Twitter and Facebook could not be immediately reached for comment on Trump’s tweets. Shares of the companies were down in pre-market trading following his posts.

 

In the pair of early morning posts, the Republican president again blasted mail-in ballots. Trump posted similar tweets about the ballot topic on Tuesday, which had moved Twitter to add a blue exclamation mark alert underneath those tweets to warn his claims were false and had been debunked by factcheckers.

 

The dramatic shift by the tech company, which has tightened its policies in recent years amid criticism that its hands-off approach has allowed misinformation to thrive, had prompted Trump to accuse it of interfering in the upcoming U.S. presidential election.

But how to explain something simple like that to Trump?

 

And then there is the question why there are still people out there who believe anything coming out of Trump's mouth. Why didn't they learn in the last 3 years that he tells BS, BS and BS all the time. It's obvious to everyone except his supporters.

When someone lies and is correctly called out for it, to subsequently threaten them for doing so is shameful. To believe that yours is the only voice people need to hear and that everything you say, true or fabricated should be uncensored and go without question or check is the action of a complete megalomaniac. Not all things against Donald are fake news, though sadly it seems the majority of what he comes out with is threats or "fake news."

Can't recall where I read it but recently someone was remarking how President Trump absolutely does not personally care for  members of his support base.

 

Joe Average, working stiff certainly won't ever be staying in one of the expensive hotels owned by Trump nor is he likely to be playing golf a few holes behind the Trump party.

 

And his yacht club would be definitely off limits to Mr. Joe Average.

 

But funny to hear the President talk as if his fan base is his big buddy.  Nothing could be further from the truth.

I disagree with Trump. Social media companies can do what they want. Only government can't restrict free speech rights of companies. Actually, Trump and leftists have a lot in common here. Leftists love to tell companies how to run their businesses with policies that go against the spirit of "we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone".

 

Hopefully, at some point, people will tire of the Twitter, Facebook et al thought police and launch sites where freedom of speech isn't just for leftists.
