So Wtf Is Bedlam....we've Heard Enough About What It's Not,

Featured Replies

So does anybody mind teaching us what BEDLAM is?

Cos for every reason that had been mentioned that it is not there is a closure, yet 20+ threads remain open...

So why is that thread okay, if this one is not.

If bedlam is a place where we are supposed to be able to let our hair down amongst friends

Why oh why is our hair standing on end?

Please clarify in order that we may comply or choose not to...

kayo, you havin' a bad hair day? I've visited about four threads where you are trying to either close them down or move them. The way your going the only thread left here in Bedlam will be TLW unless you want start discussing the sociopolitical aspects of Lithuanian potholes.

Hi Phil, I think you missed the point KO was trying to make which was not to close or move threads but something else.

When he gets back from his extended holiday :o im sure he will confirm this. :D

My take on the whole thing is that mods and admin (maybe not all) wanted to change the direction of Bedlam, but didn't convey their intention and (real?) reasons clearly to the members, but im not saying its an easy thing to do. Hence the slight confusion/tension.

Do we need this discussion? I thought this can of worms was closed for good...

Yeh, what's the point in this thread? Kayo wants to be the Bedlam thought police?

id like to see KO be the new forum moderator for Bedlam. Seriously. I think he would do a good job.

I would not presume to teach or make a stand on this but from my personal point of view I think Bedlam exists as a forum that allows members to discuss things not appropriate in the "open" arena. The benchmark of 500 post was (probably) intended to make members spend a reasonable amount of time and learn the general "rules of play" and to meet some of the characters.

Within Bedlam there are still rules but they are more elastic, moderators seem to allow greater latitude in opinion and similarly posters know they can be a bit more biting in their comments. There is much more reparte between members. I don't think anyone would take personal insult from a message posted. It may not be to their liking and the barb may be sharp but so is the fun.

Most of the posters on this forum I didn't know before joining bedlam, I am happy to be allowed the priveledge of visiting and knowing you all better. That to me is the purpose of Bedlam. Many if not most of you I will never meet outside of the forum but I am pleased to have met you.

Just my thoughts

And you could be his chief arse licker Grover. c'mon do us a favour, we've gone from Kayo on a head trip to you nominating him as a Mod.

Kayo, no offence, you're a nice enough bloke, but have you been sipping from the same cup as Ms Gorgon?

Are you judging us or are you judging the Mods?

You are getting a bit long in the tusk now eh Kayo, nearly 10,000 posts, perhaps the Mods should reconsider a geriatric ward for grumpy old Bedlamites. :o

I'm just back from holidaying in Phuket so I'm feeling very mellow at present.

I haven't read all the past week's posts in Bedlam, but have skimmed through a lot of them.

Is there really tension in here? Is your hair standing on end? Why? What is causing the problem?

If you don't want to post your reasons publically, feel free to PM me.

I'm here to help if I can.

I think it is perfectly clear what bedlam is....so clear in fact that I won't even waste your time by stating the obvious.....I'll just waste your time by posting and not stating the obvious.......maybe that's waht bedlam is for...oh danm!....I wasn't going to state the obvious...but then maybe it wasn't obvious....but now that I've said it it probably is......and I'm not even drunk!!!!!

Jai Dee (and others),

Thanks for your mellow and constructively helpful posts JD.

I was on a bit of a rampage last night. Blame carlsberg export. Sorry about that.

nonetheless, I do think that thread closing in recent times has been very random.

i guess that is mainly my point. When i went on the rampage last night, however, I think I realised why. I got bored, by the time I got through the first page of threads, and couldn't be bothered carrying on.

Anybody got any aspirin?

:D :D :o:D :D

There is 'tension' Jai Dee, there is.

I'm not PM'ing you since I think we're all grown up people, and since it's Bedlam, I hope I can speak freely (for myself of course).

The Bedlam rules have been 'stiffened' lately and I feel that's sad.

I feel that Bedlam is closing itself down bit-by-bit..., because of the 'stiffening rules', from being -sometimes- a very interesting place to ventilate interesting stories, subjects and sometimes even weird topics, to a thread rarely visited by the 500+ members.

I realize very well that Thaivisa is about Thailand and that's a good and even excellent thing for which I am grateful, like many others I suppose.

However, this Forum could NOT exist without the majority of Farang on this Forum.

Because of the toughened Bedlam-rules it is, for instance, not possible to discuss (anymore) the tragedy that took place in Virginia/USA where 33 young lives were taken because Bedlam rules are so strict now.

I can imagine that a lot of 'us' (especially the USA members) wish to ventilate and express their horror about this 'event'.

I know it's NOT about Thailand, but WHAT is Thailand and Thaivisa without 'us' Farang and the World around us-Today- ?

Oh yes, I read that a Mod said that there are plenty of other Forums (on Yahoo, if I remember well) to discuss -NON-Thailand- subjects, but since we all love Thaivisa and Thailand so much we would like to be able to discuss, sometimes, other non-Thai related items.....ON Thaivisa and BEDLAM; I for one am not interested to go to a Yahoo Forum.

Lately I was even thinking about asking Administration/Mods about allowing a thread about "Funny/exceptional/weird World News" since there are so many things I see, hear and read that I would like to share some of them with my fellow TV-members, but I didn't dare to ask.... :o

I'm convinced it would draw a lot of input and attention and THUS would be good for -and benefit- Thaivisa !

Another thing -for example- is the upcoming, next year, election of a new US President....but Bedlam doesn't allow to discuss that anymore and thats sad, since I think it is an news-item which is important to all of us, Thailand and the rest of the world.

Anyway, thank you for asking 'input' from us and I respect that very much!

It's shows an open mind and thank you for that.

Agree 100%

I hear what you say LaoPo, but what if we allowed any and all non-Thai related topics to be discussed here?

You gave the example of a US-based tragedy, which would be understandably close to the hearts of American ThaiVisa members.

But what about our members from other parts of the globe... say our Malaysian Muslim members, or our Indian Hindu members... other races and creeds and religions... ? What about topics that may be equally or more important to their personal agendas?

Do you really think that such a diverse forum could be self-managing? (ie. no moderator intervention?)

Speaking only for myself (and not the other moderators or admin), the only thing that keeps ThaiVisa subforums (including Bedlam) connectivity going is the fact that its all Thailand-relanted.

I like that... and I like the idea of disallowing non-Thai related topics. It keeps the playing field even... without fear of attack from some majority/minority who may have differing opinions and only want to stir up trouble.

Thanks for offering your public opinion Laopo... I respect that and wish to reflect that respect by offering my own public (but personal) response here. I have received some PM's, and I respect those people too... we all have (and are entitled to) our own thoughts and opinions.

Nice photo BTW cdnvic!

Of course not !

I'm sorry if I was misunderstood; I was not pointing at or asking for a NON-moderated Bedlam; of course Bedlam should be monitored and moderated according to civilized rules, written by the administration.

I was just expressing my feelings about the increased 'tougher' rules which makes it impossible to discuss 'special' NON-Thai related items. :o

Bedlam was more free a few months ago; no longer though. :D

Looking at this logically there are many examples of non Thai related discussions on TV already. Take a look at the football forum - this is apparently going to come as a surprise but Norwich is not a city in Thailand. Nor is a discussion about the differences between a Toyota Vigo versus Isuzy Dmax anything to do with Thailand. Do the forums for linux pass as a Thai specific forum? In a semi closed arena such as Bedlam why can't the discussion be along similar lines as a conversation amongst friends sitting around a table. At such a meeting of friends there are basic rules such as respect for the other person's opinion, agreement do disagree, standards of language, and vulgarity. Most civilised, mixed groups would agree that showing pornography, violent images, or illegal activities are not acceptable and that is the same as already occurs here. The difference is that with my friends, whether it is in my house, or an open bar we don't say - can't talk about the Viginia shootings because we live in Thailand and that discussion is outside our area.

I am not American and don't jump to the "freedom of speech is my god given right" but as a rational adult I think it is insulting to say I can't be allowed to say "what a tragedy is the murder of 33 people because someone had a bad day."

I think that to a greater extent within the Bedlam group there are sufficient "elders" who can pull the others into line. If I put up something nasty or inappropriate about Seugha for example. I am sure that he would be able to defend himself and have the support of at least a dozen others. As it is I have a lot of respect for Seugha and his opinions, I don't have to agree with everything he says but I shouldn't have to be afraid of being zapped by a moderator in case I write a message that disagrees with him.

I thought we could discuss non Thai related stuff here (here meaning bedlam)...so long as it doesn't descend into political rantings or other sorts of seriously enflamed and enflaming name calling..am I wrong?

I was just expressing my feelings about the increased 'tougher' rules which makes it impossible to discuss 'special' NON-Thai related items. :o

Bedlam was more free a few months ago; no longer though. :D

I always appreciate your input into the forums Laopo, however I feel that Bedlam is a much more relaxed place without the politics.

I do enjoy political debate, but when it gets to the point in a forum where every comment I make can be judged with a political perspective or my character can be brought into question with throwaway political mudslinging, there is no debate any more or even freedom of speech.

Lets have a seperate political forum perhaps, but please no politics in the playroom.
