Lack of tourists a death sentence for monkeys

A family of long-tailed macaques was found to have drowned in a water tank near Songkhla’s Wihan Daeng Shrine on Tangkuan Hill.

 

It is believed that monkeys in the area are suffering from hunger and thirst now that tourists, their main source for food, have disappeared due to the pandemic.

 

The water tanks near the shrine are not covered, so monkeys often fall in when trying to drink water and are unable to climb out due to the depth of the tanks.

 

Local officials who came to find the source of bad smell emanating from the tanks found up to 30 monkey carcasses, some floating and some sunk to the bottom.

hopefully they will eventually head into the forest once they learn no tourist are coming.

There are no forests to head into. Tangkuan Hill is an isolated forested hill at the north end of Songkhla Town. The monkey population has increased well beyond the capabilities of the land to support them because of the food tourists leave. This just demonstrates how important it is that the local authorities implement a sterilisation programme to control and maintain the population at levels the hill can support naturally. 

Or inform the tourists to stop feeding the wild animals.

That's not going to happen. There are stalls selling food for the tourists to give to the monkeys, there's a whole industry involved. That plus the tourists in question are primarily Thais and Malaysians who see no harm in it.

Monkey often fall in the tanks and die.....

 

How come not one single person thought to cover the tanks, or at least have some ropes hanging down into then so the animals can climb out? 

 

Please, any farang who live near there tie a few ropes over the side!

So why the hell the water tanks are not covered ? They wait for a kid to fall inside ?

Put a cover on the tank!

Not only monkeys will die, also people will strve to death, if things won't change soon

I guess its too much common sense to ask why someone hasn't put a piece of water pipe down into the tank so the monkeys have an escape route? Many of my friends with place in northern beaches of Sydney and other leafy natural habitat places with pools have something leaning/poking down into the water so bandicoots, possums, etc can get out of the pool if they fall in.

They aren't suppose to be fed by Tourists, they suppose to live in the forest . They jump on cars break mirrors and antennas and rip off anything of the car they can get there filthy hands on . They are a  vermin same as the Soi dogs .

Should be fined 1,000 baht for feeding monkeys, as on Koh Chang.
