I disagree. People want to feel good about the cities they live in. Having what a lot of people see as unsavoury statues of questionable characters from the past dotted about doesn't define what many people believe in.

I think the explanation for this is that the left is destructive at heart.

 

They are not creators of wealth. If you tell one of these leftwing Antifa thugs toppling monuments "You know given the huge exploitation of the colonies the UK should pay reparations, so really the best you could do is work as many hours in a day as you can, pay tax and thus enable the UK to pay as much in reparations as it can", that leftwing thug would look at you like you'd gone mad and continue to vandalise. Well, if you take India for example development aid is a tiny percentage of the UK GDP, however, the amount the UK looted from India is staggering by comparison. One does not weigh up the damage done by centuries of exploitation, famine, wars etc.
