The problem is the people who celebrate the history, it's been hijacked to relive former glories and those days are gone.

This lot today are already looking for fights at 11am, sad dangerous days. Now they have broken through they cordon and fighting with the police.

People don't "Celebrate" history. They remember history. That's two different things.

This kind of mob-driven fascism worked out so well in Kampuchea in the 70s, didn't it?

I was refering more to the people who are defending statues today. I remember history and I have read about most of our major conflicts. Mark Felton productions on Youtube is very good source of information of little known events in WW2.

So you obviously have no former glories, and you don't want those who have to forget them.

Hmmmmm, does that include your dad, your grandfathers too....?   ????

But statues are part of our history. They are there for us to remember. Now I'm not saying by any means that some of them are not controversial but who decides that?. As has been said many times before, Churchill was no saint, hell no-ones perfect but should it be removed ? No of course not for two simple reasons

1) His views reflect the views of the time

2) His failings are far far superceded by his successes.

I would hope that those who look upon his statue have a hunger to learn more about him rather than have a blinkered view that he was a racist.

The slave trade was abhorrant for OUR times, it truely was but as a white guy, I am not going to apologise for it. I am however going to condemn those idiots who, in my opinion have very little understanding of the history of the slave trade and who have inadvertantly prospered from it. They are nothing more than vandals who don't have the capacity to think or debate.

It's the defenders this week who will cause the trouble.

The police are spineless, they should realise they are making matters worse

Have you ever been a policeman and had to put up with the daily abuse, both oral and physical, being spat on, heavy things thrown at you, been cornered in a place that you can't get out of, seeing your colleagues injured on a daily basis, always having to be alert in case some PC idiot provokes you and you get the blame for starting it. Remembering that you won't get much support from your supervisors, chief constables or the government. It will always be YOUR fault.

Try walking a few miles in their boots and see how easy it is and then come back and report. They police have had their numbers cut for years but if YOU get assaulted, beaten up, robbed. stabbed, had your house burgled and trashed, had your car stolen, who will you turn to? Your local police force or some PC orientated mob?

Nice to know that Isil is alive and well and now operating in the the Uk. Personally i don,t see any difference to there wanton destruction of sacred monuments in Syria to what is happening in the uk....very sad.

There is a lot of things people should not be doing, arguing over a democratic vote for 5 years is just another.

Back in the day, discussion and disagreement were allowed in British politics.
We used to get to vote on policy matters at General Elections, and change our minds from time to time.

I can see why nostalgia is so popular.

You have had two votes now, one on Scots Indy and the other on the EU, you cannot change your mind because you don't agree with the result, (well you can but it won't do you any good), not a accepting a result because it didn't go your way is neither fair nor democratic, it is not all about you.

now that he added fuel to the Brexit fire, he scarpered to Germany, where he will collect his EUP pension. His wife will get hers too, as he subbed her as his 'secretary'. England just does not produce politicians of character any more.

These vandal protesters should have been forcibly removed and charged at the start.

Absolutely disgraceful .....  nothing more than idiots who try to change the truth of the past.

Follow the money.

Whichever way you wish to look at it, we cannot let a few mindless idiots dictate to the majority of the country, and they won't. But please spare me the socialist lecture, if Labour were any good they would have been in power a long time ago.

in here somewhere is todays comment from a former Tory minister:

The most straightforward way to assess the UK’s performance is to compare the number of deaths with the fatalities normally experienced for the time of year. The “excess death” rate over the average of the previous five years has topped 60,000. With 955 “excess deaths” for every million people, the UK has the grimmest record of all countries providing comparable data. In that respect only can the Johnson government’s performance be said to be “world-beating”.

The other side of the dismal coin is the economic calamity inflicted by this pandemic. On this measure, too, the record is likely to be bleaker than similar countries. The OECD is projecting that the UK will suffer the deepest downturn among advanced economies. It is only a forecast, but it chimes with other indicators suggesting that this country will pay a uniquely high price for its sluggish imposition of the lockdown and the government’s chaotic mismanagement of the attempt to grope towards an exit. All of which is fuelling the fear that it will be Britain’s fate to get the worst of both worlds: a higher death rate than comparable countries and a more ravaged economy. That dread now radiates from Tories like a pungent musk.

One former cabinet minister says: “If the public conclude that we are a useless shower of incompetents who were asleep at the wheel, they’ll start taking a serious look at Sir Keir Starmer QC.”

If they're going to pull down these old statues, as they surely are, politicians too weak to stop it, then they should replace them with tributes to art & beauty, like this petition in Louisiana calls for to replace some Confederate statue with one of Britney Spears:

https://www.newser.com/story/292221/petition-asks-louisiana-for-britney-spears-statues-instead.html

And that would I hope be, at the least, one of her in a skimpy bikini. She'd like that.

So it's time to start deciding on who'd be appropriate for these old Brits. Opener: Spice Girls?

The Scout movement must learn from the "failings" of its founder Robert Baden-Powell, chief scout Bear Grylls says.

The adventurer was speaking following a row about whether to take down a statue of Baden-Powell in Poole, Dorset.

Amid claims of Baden-Powell being a supporter of Hitler, the local council initially said it would remove the statue to stop it being targeted.

I was a Boy Scout in the 5th Poole troop long before Bear Grylls was even a twinkle in his Daddy's eye and nothing I was taught then IMHO diminishes Robert Baden-Powell in my eyes, and I am sure that many of the 50 odd million current  and former Scouts feel the same.

I feel and think that the world has gone crazy this year and I found a couple of links that agree with me.

This one from the Antelope Valley press

This past week has been wrought with news of the Coronavirus. From events like Coachella and the South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade being canceled, to Italy going into quarantine, it’s been non-stop Coronavirus coverage and discussion.

And this one from the Ponoka News in Canada.

It seems these days that the world has gone mad.

At least watching White House news conferences has increased my gratitude to be a Canadian and Albertan at this time.

That’s not to say all is well at home, with the Liberals trying to pass a law to restrict what people can say online about COVID-19, but I sure am glad to have a calm, rational-sounding person at the helm in Dr. Deena Hinshaw rather than a blustering president in denial.

I too was a cub in a scout hut that had previously been frequented by the man himself within walking distance of Charterhouse school where he had been a master. The building was adorned with a number of Edwardian relics that were fascinating to a young kid of not yet 10, inc;

- A White Tiger trophy mounted on the wall,

- A Polar Bear skin on the floor

- Zulu long & short spears & an animal hide shield mounted together in a cross.

Kids these days don't know they're born ????

Can't they find some merit badges and Scouting books to burn instead of pulling down the statue?
