India says three soldiers killed in 'violent faceoff' on border with China

NEW DELHI/BEIJING (Reuters) - Three Indian soldiers were killed in a “violent faceoff” with Chinese troops on the disputed border, the Indian Army said on Tuesday, reporting the first casualties in 53 years to result from a clash between the nuclear-armed neighbours.

 

Indian government sources said no shots were fired but a physical fight broke out between the two sides with soldiers using batons and throwing stones, which resulted in the casualties.

 

China blamed India for the clash on Monday and editor of the government-controlled Global Times said the Chinese military had also suffered casualties.

 

India and China have been locked in a standoff in the Galwan valley in western Himalayas for weeks with both accusing each other of trespassing into the other’s territory.

 

Talks to pull back hundreds of troops deployed in the remote region have been held over the last ten days but no breakthrough had emerged.

 

“During the de-escalation process underway in the Galwan Valley, a violent face-off took place yesterday night with casualties on both sides,” the Indian army said in a statement.

 

“The loss of lives on the Indian side includes an officer and two soldiers. Senior military officials of the two sides are currently meeting at the venue to defuse the situation.”

 

The officer who died was a colonel rank, the sources said.

 

India and China fought a brief border war in 1962 and have not been unable to settle their border dispute despite talks spread over two decades.

 

Border guards have had skirmishes, even fisticuffs when patrols have confronted each other, but there has been no loss of life at the border since bloody clashes erupted in the eastern Himalayas in 1967.

 

The Chinese foreign ministry called on India not to take any unilateral action or stir up trouble.

 

BLAME

 

A ministry spokesman in Bejing said there was a serious violation of the consensus reached by the two countries when Indian troops provoked and attacked Chinese personnel, leading to a serious physical conflict.

 

“What’s shocking is that on June 15, the Indian side severely violated our consensus and twice crossed the border line and provoked and attacked the Chinese forces, causing a violent physical confrontation between the two border forces,” Zhao Lijian told reporters in Beijing.

 

“China is raising strong opposition and stern representations to the Indian side on this,” he said. There was no information provided on any casualties.

 

The editor-in-chief of China’s Global Times newspaper said the Chinese military had suffered losses, though it was unclear whether those were deaths or wounded.

 

“Based on what I know, the Chinese side also suffered casualties in the Galwan Valley physical clash,” Hu Xijin said in a tweet. He did not give further details. The Global Times is published by the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party.

 

The Asian giants have rival claims to vast swathes of territory along their mountainous 3,500 km (2,173 mile) border, but the disputes have remained largely peaceful since the 1962 war.

 

Indian military officials said previously Chinese soldiers had entered into India’s side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) or the de facto border at several locations in early May.

 

During the talks, the Indian side had been demanding the Chinese withdraw troops while Beijing said New Delhi must stop construction of the roads in the disputed area.

 

“This is extremely, extremely serious, this is going to vitiate whatever dialogue was going on,” former Indian army commander D. S. Hooda said, commenting on Monday’s clash.

 

India's main stock indexes .NSEI .BSESN fell 0.8% each after the news, but recouped losses to close around 1% higher. The Indian rupee INR=D4 ended at 76.21 against the dollar after earlier falling to 76.30, its lowest since April 28.

Why is it bad news after bad news after really bad news lately ......   it becomes a bit much when economies and markets continue to falter. 2020 ....  the worst year for a long time ....

Both sides were keeping their distance (more or less) up until a couple weeks ago when CHINA started moving thousands of troops into the area and started building fortifications.

It was clearly meant as a provocation and they are using the current crisis to divert attention away from the issue. 

As noted in a different news article, it seems at least 20 Indian soldiers have died so far.

Of course China is blaming everything on India. It seems, if you listen to the Chinese media, nothing is ever their fault. The South China sea, Hong Kong, Covid virus, clashes with India - it's all someone else's fault !

Populist leaders, around the world, got in power around 2016. We are now experiencing their inept abilities to handle situations, which should not escalate to crisis. 

 

They had their talks about problems, but don't have any solutions. This is what happens when populists get to power and it's not even close to be over yet. I hope we will survive.

Both countries ill afford to go to war at the times of economic woes. None of both leaders issued any official comment. Just border skirmishes and will be sorted out relatively quickly.

Taiwan and Hong Kong were originally a part of China and China wants them back ; China and India just disagree where the border is .

Can you explain why Taiwan should not 'take the mainland back' instead? It isn't as if the communist party has ruled Taiwan for even a single second. The people of Taiwan are free and democratic, and are under no obligation to rejoin a land ruled by self-appointed, answerable-to-no-one corrupt leaders. The CP never ruled HK either, but the Brits lost the chance to let the HKers enjoy democracy and self-rule.

 

Henry Kissinger once visited the former senior CP member and govt official Bo Xilai before Bo was jailed for "corruption", which in the CP is like tearing that tag off your mattress that says 'Do not remove under penalty of law". Bo had a map on his office wall that had 'Greater China' as the mainland, Taiwan, HK and Myanmar. China regularly gets into tiffs with Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia over islands that China likes to claim. The border dispute with India heats up occasionally when China seeks more rivers to dam, but the last big tiff was in 1961. China is expansion-hungry, and with the current vacuum in international leadership owing to CV-19 and to one country being led by someone so willfully ignorant he told Indian PM Modi, "Lucky you don't share any border with China", they are trying to flex their muscles in various places.

 

I suspect there are Chinese cartographers who right now are drawing some soon-to-be ancient maps that show Myanmar, northern India, some of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and maybe even Thailand were 'once part of the Motherland'.

Not really standing up to China but India standing their ground in an ill defined inhospitable territory. Pakistan's trading route with China will be cut off if India control that territory. As we speak, both countries are attempting a rapid deescalation of tensions. Just a small brawl. No firearms were used. No need for misdirected alarm.

The Chinese fashion clubs with nails, and like weapons, beforehand. Then they set up a tent on what they know is the Indian side of the border. The Indians come out to take it down and they are swarmed by Chinese. Twenty, twenty four (?) are beaten to death and bashed with rocks and other hand weapons. Many of these could have been saved, but Indians were prevented from rescuing their wounded. They froze to death in a ravine. The Only alternative, is escalate, open up the howitzers, rockets, twin 50’s and let her rip. The Chinese figured that would not happen. NOW All this was deliberate, premeditated on the Chinese part.

So that is how China does business when they think they can get away with it

Note to our troops, be friendly, be nice, smile, never let your weapons out of your grasp. Never EVER allow yourself to be at a power disadvantage or maneuvered into one.

The Indian soldiers come down and take it out (your words). How then can this be deliberate and premeditated by the Chinese. Surely the Indian soldiers were going there for a fight and were prepared for a fight. It surprised you that the Chinese had weapons in this highly tensed border area? Be real. This is not summer camp site. The Chinese lost soldiers too. It was an unfortunate brawl. Don't try to extend that to some kind of Chinese bashing.
