For the past few weeks I have a large monitor screen operating from a new laptop with good success, but these past few days while using Bluetooth earphones, I suddenly find that I cannot control the volume or anything else while using my mouse, then a notice comes up, VLC not responding, and it is never the same again while I am watching a particular movie.

VLC works well with any other computer I have used, so why is this happening now? Do I uninstall my VLC and reinstall, or change my video player altogether. Why should my VLC suddenly become so unreliable?

There was an update a day or two ago

But that should not stop the older version from working correctly.

Un-&- reinstall first of all. Run as Admin.

Or try a Sysyem Restore back to a time it did work OK, or restore from your essential back-up.

It could be an issue with using the bluetooth headphones. Your laptop contains an audio system, the external large monitor may have an audio system over the HDMI connection, then connecting your bluetooth device produces a third audio system. Having and switching audio output and input choices sometimes breaks Windows 10 or programs run on it (at least it does on my older laptop running Dolby Digital enhancement drivers).

If there is a driver conflict issue there's not much hope in solving it without someone writing and pushing an update.

Try testing if an audio system conflict is causing an issue:

  1. Remove just the HDMI connected Large Display, leave the bluetooth connected then play a movie in VLC
  2. Remove just the bluetooth headphones (keep them turned off), leave the HDMI Large Display connect then play a movie in VLC
  3. Remove both the HDMI and bluetooth and play a movie in VLC

...see if VLC acts any differently in each scenario

Great answer Rich. Possum, go to the Volume icon at the bottom right, right click to see which Sound Device the mouse and/or volume control on your keyboard is controlling, and adjust accordingly.

Also note, some versions of the bluetooth stack (bluetooth software version and feature set) allow the bluetooth device to connect and be seen by the bluetooth host (the PC or Smartphone) as different types of devices (ie: Stereo speakers; Hands Free AG Audio, etc). Each device type profile allows different protocols and features to operate, paired with the capabilities of that device.

Some of the audio profiles should allow 'synched' media controls, allowing you to change the master volume using the buttons on the bluetooth device.

Sometime the profile isn't detected or set up properly (usually because of badly written or conflicting hardware drivers). This can sometimes be rectified on PCs by adding an external bluetooth USB stick (that comes with it's own drivers) and disabling the PC built-in bluetooth.
