What is the best way to drive to Mukdahan, go to Khon Kaen then to Kalasin then on to Mukdahan, or go to Ubon Ratchathani then up to Mukdahan , Thanks 

Ubon Ratchathani is too far east for this route. Quite a detour.

Khon Kaen is a bit too far north, leave #2 earlier as seen in the route linked.

 

Not very inventive as I can't tell from experience for all the route, but the first suggestion of Google looks quite feasible.

 

I know the route through Prachin Buri, up #304 and up #2 to Khon Kaen.

But as seen you should turn east before KK heading towards Maha Sarakham, Kalasin on to Mukdahan.

And that is the part that I don't know.

 

It's many years that I drove Khon Kaen to Mukdahan and I remember that #12 became a two lane road somewhere after Kalasin.

Yeah, that's the best route.

I often drive from Surin to chachensaou (sorry for spelling) 

I drive on the small road via Sa keaw and kabin. 

The rout is peppered with yellow busses with pattaya - mukdaHan written on the side. 

Its a very nice drive, and not busy, so quicker than the korat route.   I believe it starts from the south as highway 331.

Ubon to Mukdahan takes about 2.5 hours...
