The Ministry of Health announced yesterday the number of dengue fever cases throughout the country declined by 88 percent in the first six months of 2020, compared with the same period last year. Health Minister Mam Bun Heng said in the statement that there has only been 3,339 dengue fever cases in the first six months of this year, compared to 28,285 cases in the same period of 2019. Over the same period, there had only been four fatalities to the disease while last year recorded 32.

He said the disease has most notably declined in Phnom Penh and the provinces of Preah Sihanouk, Pailin, Siem Reap, Kandal, Kampong Thom, Takeo, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri and Preah Vihear. “Right now, the dengue fever situation is under control due to a joint effort by the ministry and communities,” he said.

“However, the ministry continues to urge parents to maintain a clean house and environment to protect their children from dengue fever,” he said. Bun Heng said controlling dengue fever was everybody’s responsibility and asked parents to eliminate mosquito breeding areas. He said any parents who suspect their child has dengue fever must send them to the hospital immediately.

Very good news indeed and someone must be doing something right. Two days ago (14 July) an article here on TVF noted Thailand recorded 25,000 cases with 15 fatalities in the same time period.
