How can you type up such a nasty comment regarding someone who had a serious accident. He is injured badly for Christ's sake..   Truly hope he recovers and makes it through as best as he can

No helmet, speeding, in Thailand = the inevitable.

Speedy recovery, maybe you will learn, i.e. if he survives that, that is a bad mix, in Thailand, let alone anywhere in the world.

Should I assume that there will be a Go Fund me page set up soon ?

Another GoFundMe job I'm afraid.

No lid, insurance apparently invalidated when he failed to follow UK government advice to return to the UK.

Yeah utter stupidity get no sympathy from me.

sucks to be him but hopefully he learns from the situation.

Looking at the photos of the wedding and the dogs on the link, his family setting up a go fund me page seems inappropriate to me for the lifestyle he decided to live

Looks a bit of a wide boy, but still a sad tale regardless of that and no lid, insurance etc. At least his wife is here with him. Not looking good for him.

A very confusing tale, business class flights, bought house in Thailand, top class Hotels, bought expensive bikes. All came crashing down due to a moment of carelessness on a bike, now reduced to go fund me, as I said, confusing.

Just quoting the original article linked in the first post.

Do verify that you are correct with your insurance provider.

unfortunately his health insurance expired recently and was not renewed.

If travel insurance, wouldn't have been any good on a bike over 125cc and doubly so without a helmet.

Not enough attention paid to cognitive abilities vs gym time....

poor decision leads to adverse consequences...

Very good advice Crossy, people thinking they are covered, then have a problem, only to find insurance invalid.

The linked article has a quote from the provider

Quote

A spokeswoman for Virgin Money said: "We sympathise with Mr Standley and his family’s situation. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advised UK travellers to return home in May using repatriation flights.

"Unfortunately not following FCO travel advice invalidates a policy. In addition, the maximum time our annual travel insurance policies cover single overseas stays is 90 days.”

He lived here, why would travel insurance cover ?

You don't bounce so well at 40, superfit or not. Seems like a nice guy, what a sh@#fest. Hope he has deep pockets. Personally, I steer away from motorcycles, unless absolutely necessary. My SO's pick up is the go to in most situations. Still, if some older guys want to take the chance up to them, so long as they realise the risks.

Sad for all, but I can only say on top of what I already said, if one chooses not to take care of oneself and start to become responsible, i.e. tone it down, then life can turn on them, and those around them end up suffering.

I say the above having lost a brother years after his motorbike accident where he got busted up badly, taking to the bottle which ended his life, sad for my mother to watch to this day 12 years on, I too was a bit of a loose cannon clocking up to 220km an hour on an open road, no side streets, however toned it down after my heart attack, so I suppose I learned, miss the bike though ????

Really? First off all there were free automatic extensions to my policy because the COVID-19 situation. Then I have been able to extend it beyond that. Fully covered, even for COVID-19.

He was just careless. Knowingly no insurance and no helmet.

sensible people obey traffic law.  Hopefully this will encourage common sense/courtesy.

I’ve been through very similar, and some worse injuries from an accident myself and I have some empathy or him but, accidents are unavoidable and he could have quite easily avoided some of his injuries with some forethought. He obviously thought he was bulletproof.
I’d never wish my 4 months in hospital, 5 years of rehab and lifetime disabilities on anyone, even a silly <deleted> such as him. My best wishes go to him

He obviously has a Virgin Money annual travel insurance policy. 90 days per trip.

So perhaps he would usually return to the UK every 90 days, but chose to not do so. Either way, he is just another dodgy geezer. Investment banker, my posterior.
