How much weight can a hollow plasterboard wall bare, with regards to a heavy TV and wall attachment?

 

We have a 32 inch TV that weighs 7kg without stand.

 

And a 48 inch that weighs 10Kg without stand.

 

The locations we want to put them are on a hollow plasterboard wall. 

 

They seem very heavy to attach using a wall mount. 

 

 

There are tall stands available, but we would prefer a solid wall mount.

 

Is it safe to mount a 10Kg TV on the hollow plasterboard wall?

The shop that fitted a TV wall mount to my apartment drywall used four cavity fixings on each rail. It would take a lot of force to pull it off. Most of the load is vertical. 

You should mount the  bracket that holds the tv to the "stud work"  that hold the plasterboards up,

sometimes they are wood sometimes metal

 

if not possible to mount directly to the stud work then   you need to spread the weight over as large a surface area as possible    I used that method  once by  cutting a piece of   10 mm plywood/particleboard

to slightly under the tv size  ( about 50 inch tv) fix the plywood to the wall  using  10 or more  plasterboard anchors  around the outer edges  (they have butterfly expander wings not normal screws)   then use normal (but large and as many as possible)

screws to mount the tv bracket to the plywood  plasterboard sandwich...test before hanging the tv ????

I tested by pulling vertically down on the tv bracket as close to the wall as possible so as to not produce a pulling force....it took my whole weight >60 kgs

that was static weight obviously  not jumping up and down on it.

 

If a fastener does not specify how much weight it can handle on the package, don't buy it. Get one that can support the right weight. Also the thickness of plasterboard will be important.

There's a wooden dresser in front of it, so thankfully the ghastliness is mostly hidden. 

Tap the wall till you find the wood behind the plasterboard and if you can put screws through there where you hear a hollow sound put a butterfly clip

Wrong country. They don't use wood in Thailand.

But the plasterboard is mounted on something...usually aluminum or steel lattice...you need to mount your brackets on whatever supports the plaster

My condo walls were concrete so no problem for my bedroom telly

They do use wood   but its not the best choice in many cases as the insects love it, also seems to be a more expensive  option  than steel/metal...

I'm always bemused at those  wooden/plasterboard American houses

why keep building them in hurricane zones...just get blown away all the time ????

For plasterboard studs they don't. Plasterboard is not a traditional building material in Thailand and wood studs aren't used for it now, nor was it ever. There's probably as many igloos in Thailand as there are houses made of wood 2x4's.
