The government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration reported seven new virus cases over a 24-hour period today (August 20).

The latest cases are three male hotel employees, aged 28, 38 and 46, who returned from the United Arab Emirates on August 7 and were found positive on August 18 in a Bangkok state quarantine hotel. A 33-year-old Thai male tourist, who travelled to Hong Kong in February and returned on August 15, was found positive three days later, also in a Bangkok state quarantine hotel. Two 51-year-old males, who returned home from Singapore on August 7, were found positive on the 11th day in a Chon Buri state quarantine hotel. And a 21-year-old female student, who came home from Egypt on August 17, was found positive later the same day.

All new cases were asymptomatic.

Meanwhile, 19 patients have been discharged and have returned home.

As of today, the number of confirmed cases in the country stands at 3,389 (452 found in state quarantine). Of these, 113 are under treatment, 3,218 have recovered and been discharged, and 58 have died.

Globally, the number of confirmed cases has increased to 22.5 million, up by 272,000 in 24 hours, with 15.3 million recovering and 791,000 dying. Thailand ranks 115th for most cases in the world. The US has the highest number (5.7 million), followed by Brazil (3.46 million) and India (2.83 million).

WHO needs to look into how these cases keep occuring in ASQ after so much pre testing to get here ????

1. Most cases have been Thais in SQ and they are not pre-tested.

2. It is quite common to test negative in the initial stages of infection. This is why the quarantine period is 14 days with a repeat test on day 13-14.

so what are thais doing there as a job ?

There are/were thousands of Thais working in the Arab world, mainly in the hospitality industry. Chefs, waiters, massage centres and spas, even hairdressers.

I met my own Thai wife in a hotel spa in Egypt where she was working as a masseuse.

Given the consistent rate of eligible returnees being discovered to be infected with C-19 I am bemused by the constant calls that the doors be thrown open to Tourists in general as some magical answer to economic woes.

Are there really hordes of genuine Tourists desperate to risk infection and various resulting outcomes by undertaking international travel at this point in time? Or if there are so many are they really "tourists" or intentional refugees from locations that are more relatively high risk and/or  living  with  mandatory restrictions on daily lives?

That is a distinct difference to those possible that want to reunite with  spouses and immediate family who although possibly numbering in the thousands are obviously  well short of the historic millions  who used to fuel tourism.

Thailand can be seen to be a relatively safe haven and need guard against the very real risk of undoing the results of the  approach it has taken.

So you are required to be tested before flying as well as a fit to fly doctors note, insurance etc, then you get on a flight then tested again and then before you leave quarantine or after you get out you mysteriously have Covid! Is it not possible or more likely that Thailand is infecting them? Be it in the quarantine hotels or there actually being far more Covid in thailand than the General is saying because he has been so honest so far about all things!!!

If you are referring to the article I suggest you read posts #4 and #5 if you think the Thais who have tested positive in SQ were tested before flying.....

So it's quite possible to become infected by an untested returner if on the same flight, even after all the precautions you've had to take? It's just completely mad. The untested could infect the whole flight if later found to be positive. Ok so they're all headed for quarantine in any case, but so what?

Thais not tested before flying and now it is proposed to admit tourists after Oct. 1st without requiring them to quarantine.  Additionally there is no tracking requirement for Thai returnees but there must be one for foreigners.  What a confused mess!

Supposed to be that all tourists will have to do 14 day quarantine if Thailand opens up on 1st October ,check Bangkok post website
