Pattaya: Business and tourism leader calls for more help from the government

The chief of Pattaya's business and tourism council has called for more help from the government to help the struggling tourism sector.

The calls from Ekkasit Ngampichet come as a mobile government meeting is being held today and tomorrow in Rayong.

Ekkasit wants to see extensions to government help for employees.

Various schemes came to an end in July but the fallout from the pandemic continues.

He warned of more layoffs and hotel closures if help is not forthcoming as it was clear there are few tourists these days.

He also wanted protection not just for Thais in the hotel sector but the workers from other countries.

He also called for a more realistic approach to helping hotels pay high electricity bills.

Other measures to help the industry included an extension to the times when people can book for the "Rao Thiaw Duay Kan" (Let's travel together) promotion. At present it is just from 6am to 9pm. It should be 24 hours a day as many people log on later in the evening.

Also he wants to see more stimulus to encourage people to come to Pattaya from further afield. Handouts at the moment encourage people to come from a 300 km radius - for those further afield it does not make financial sense to visit.

He also expressed concern for what is happening from October and called for greater clarity in this regard.

Don't be so greedy, we bought you a submarine or two! We'll store them at Sattahip Harbor for your convenience!

'for your convenience'  Are you suggesting the public will be encouraged to p!ss on them at the harbour?

If the submarines had been bought earlier and painted yellow then people with the Chinese virus could have been quarantined in the "Yellow Submarines" as foreseen in the Beetles song "We all Live in a Yellow Submarine". That might become a tourist attraction!

Several Years ago, there used to be a Yellow Submarine Tourist Attraction in Pattaya.

What happened to that one ?

Where is the pressure from other thai tourist resorts - the islands, hua hun, chiang mai?

It is this kind of pressure from business, and pressure from the public, that will encourage the govt to nuance its single goal of 0 covid.

Given that tourism is a fifth of gdp, and china a third of tourists, you could hike gdp and employment by almost 10% simply by letting in visitors from China.

No 100,000$  insurance.

No 14 day quarantine.

Just a fit-to-fly certificate.

After all, China is as clean as Thailand.

I would rather prefer that China pays for the damage they caused, without sending their spitting hordes again.

Opening the country with reasonable conditions which make common sense ....... might be definitely a step in the right direction - until then, keep on dreaming ????

Let the hotels, restaurants and bars close. Let the factories shut down, Let the Baht reach astronomical levels.  As long as the government gets more submarines and a Chinese bullet train—everything’s OK.

Maybe use them as a new tour.... 40 baht a pop for Thais 400 for farangs to walk around.

financially rewarding the country that caused this ruination in the first place (and the wise cabinet that voted to spend these billions.)

Hmmm.....

He doesn't need to 'call' for more help. He has a direct line to the upper echelons of government through his brother.

So making it public looks a bit like posturing.

The government does seem to have its priorities out of place...especially when you consider Thailand was last invaded by Japan, with whom Thais currently have warm relations, and its historic enemies, Cambodia and Myanmar, don't have much in the way of navies.

The response from the CIC (clowns in charge) is for a new attraction to bring millions of tourists to Pattaya, Submarine Racing.

Cheers
