That's better! Pattaya shows its humanitarian side as dozens of desperate people offered hope

Pattaya has now shown its humanitarian face after criticism earlier in the week regarding the issue of the large number of desperate homeless people in the city.

 

Earlier a story on Thaivisa criticized a local media outlet and posters who blamed homeless people for their dire situation.

 

Now City Hall, other local officials from Bang Lamung and even the police have shown a much better attitude. 

 

Yesterday deputy mayor Banleu Kunlawanich led a group that found 33 people on Beach Road and in the nooks and crannies of nearby areas who were all sleeping out. 

 

77kaoded reported that most of them were unemployed and homeless because of the pandemic.

 

They said that they didn't want to go back to their hometowns because they didn't want to be a burden on their families. 

 

So they were sleeping rough in the hope that better times might come. 

 

The people were taken to homeless shelters run by the Chonburi authorities.

 

Deputy Banleu said that the night's activity would help restore a better image to the streets and help the people find alternative ways to earn a living and help them get back on their feet.

while it is a commendable act, it is hardly a long time solution to the plight of those homeless folks, but what do you do when the government is bent on buying submarines by the dozen while neglecting their citizens in need, priority is the name of the game here...

Can't have people sleeping in the streets, might scare off the tourists.

 

If they acted on this much earlier, they wouldn't have been in this predicament, the fact that it took them so long to act shows the type of heartless people one is dealing with, it's all about, me, me, and mini me.

For months now local businesses (mainly farang) have been handing out thousands of food parcels to these people with little or no recognition by the authorities/media...strange how this story gets immediate publicity

There have always been socialy excluded people sleeping outside in this area.

I have seen this people around Pattaya Beach for long time now.

They have not capacity to work in construktion sites or  in the fishing industry.

I think only prostitutes and ladymen can hang around on the Beach Road at night. These homeless people might damage the image of Pattaya.

Given a choice I don't think they want to be a burden to anyone... going back home to unemployment or staying where you might find something... tough choice.

I get that, but during such tough times, wouldn't you want to be with family?  Otherwise, what is the point of family?   

 

Could it be many of these people are estranged from their family, perhaps by their own fault?

the people going to pattaya are often the children,

the way pension system works here is that the children sends 3000 baht a month to the parents.

now that they lost the job due to government shut down,

they cant send money back and are ashamed of it,

and dont want to go back for that reason alone,

and then on top of that they dont want to double down by

becoming a burden (another non productive mouth to feed)
