My low-cost Lenovo Laptop is now 4 years old. But in the meantime it takes about 1 1/2 minutes to start it up. Once running, everything is as fast as before and as good as ever.
But still, is the machine trying to tell me something that I should know?

No such option under my settings...

On my Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview laptop the checkboxes are on the same page as Define Power Buttons ...MS keep moving them from version to version. I found mine by clicking SETTINGS / Power & Sleep [Related Settings / additional power settings] / Choose what the Power Buttons Do

 

 

...another issue I've recently run into on slow laptops involves having a system become sluggish after upgrading or replacing AntiVirus Security Suite software. Apparently the helper or uninstaller apps DON'T always remove all the installed code.

 

A friend was recently complaining bitterly that he'd previously been able to keep multiple browser windows visible to play facebook casino games, then after an update was struggling to get the laptop running and open a single windows. "AskWoody" recently highlighted an AntiVirus Removal Tool utility program whose primary function was to scan systems for uninstalled left-over security suite remnants either still in the startup loop or had remnants still running that were hogging system resources unnecessarily. 

 

Anyway, ran the utility against his laptop and found 5 different AntiVirus companies still had code running (he'd switch every year to get the best deal). After running the utility uninstallers and manually nuking the folders of anything else, he was back to being a happy camper running 4 simultaneous sessions. 

 

So there's that.

It's telling you to fit a solid state drive in place of the slow, spinning disc storage.

When I used Windows a lot I relied on a program called Autoruns to handle slow startup issues.  It is still available for most Windows versions.  Make sure you understand what a startup program is intended to do before you eliminate/change how it starts.

 

If you're in doubt about a particular entry on the list, do an internet search or ask the Windows experts on this forum.  I've migrated to Hack/Macintosh so I can no longer offer much help for Windows issues.

Go to "task manager" select "start-up" then right click each entry and select "search online".  Job done

The last time I used Windows very much, it was WinXP.  I don't think that option existed for XP.????‍????

... I've got a 2013 Samsung schlepptop and was told in mid '18 we couldn't do that due to it being too old ... that indeed possible or did the bloke just bullshoit me to get rid of one of his outdated hard-drives?

It was BS!  Some would say that an SSD gives a bigger performance boast to older systems rather than new ones.

... yes, agreed, would be in order, the replacement hard-drive does work relatively fine as does the whole machine given the hours, heat & moisture etc. ... but fast it sure as hell ain't ...

Being a 2013 machine it may have the old IDE Interface rather than the present day SATA interface and he only had a SATA SSD in stock.  Also the old BIOS may not have been compatible but that is doubtful.

Production of IDE/PATA interfaces ceased in December 2013.  It was possible, but I agree unlikely that it was the older interface. Please note I only said that it "may have the old IDE".  I was only trying to find some excuse to back up the salesperson's excuse!

If it's the Celeron 847 CPU, it's a pitiful processor. But still enough to run Windows 10 64 bit in conjunction with 4 GB of RAM or 32 bit in conjunction with 2 GB of RAM.

 

It must be unbearable to use in it's current state.

 

A clean install to SSD would make it pleasant for browsing and Office tasks.

Price for an inexpensive SSD between 500 to 600 baht. I wouldn't spend more if it's the Celeron 847 CPU.

 

You'll need to find an empty 8 GB or more in capacity USB Thumb drive, in order to create the Windows 10 installation media.

 

All very easy to do yourself. Can draw up a guide if you intend to move forward with this project.

Also it's still trying to sort it all out with the original 2GB RAM, so probably that's also a - if not the main - problem in my case, perhaps should start with that (?)

No the main problems are the HDD, CPU and RAM in that order.

 

First upgrade should be SSD and then RAM. But best to do both, then install Windows 10 64 bit.

 

Don't hesitate, just do it. For the measly cost and the little effort involved, you'll be a happy bunny.

 

First make the decision, then we'll get to the detail of what to order.

 

Otherwise you'll put it on the back burner and do nothing. It will take you five to ten minutes to fit the RAM and the SSD and a little more to clean install Windows 10 to the laptop. Up and running within an hour.

I watched the SSD & RAM related videos, doesn't appear to be rocket science, cost also not a problem.

Will make a photo of the model no. sticker tomorrow in daylight, just to make sure we get the proper parts (laptopinventory.com for example does not list the exact model (number), I don't think I made a mistake copying it though) ...

It's 16 GB. But there is no way that it's worth it to max out the RAM anyway. 4 GB is adequate for that device. Maybe 6 GB dependent on what is in there now.
