I live in Thailand with my wife and 2 children. We have visited the UK 5 previous times, and plan on returning for a holiday for a few months in March ( if we can). My question is, is the UK embassy/VFS still issuing  UK visas as normal with the current situation with covid?. can Thai Nationals enter the UK, and would we all need to complete 14 days quarantine on our return?

TIA

The UK Embassy don't process Visa Applications, applications are processed by the the UKVI in the UK.

Your wife will need to apply online and she can also upload her supporting evidence, she will need to visit the Visa Application Centre to have a biometric details captured, hand in her passport and, if she hasn't already done, pay VFS to scan and upload her supporting evidence.

Applications are still being processed.

Thai nationals are currently allowed to enter the UK, there has never been a restriction for those with a visa.

Currently you'd all need to self isolate at home, or at suitable accomodation,  for for 14 days on arrival, what the position will be in March is anyones guess.

Thanks, yes she has applied successfully 5 times  previously for the visa with no issues.

So it would mean 14 days on arrival in the UK for all of us, then a further 14 days on arrival back in Thailand, correct?.

One further question, can my wife apply for a Schengen visa without having a uk visa?, i.e come March, if for some reason we couldn't get to the UK, could she apply purely for a Schengen visa if other countries were open for non Nationals?

Yes, she could though if you intend doing both she should apply for the UK visa first and submit her full travel plans with her Schengen application.

Don’t forget there will be no short cut applications for spouses of UK Nationals when she applies for her Schengen Visa, she would have to provide evidence of flights and accommodation for all her time in Schengen as well as insurance, along with evidence of affordability and ties to her home country. The right for our spouses to visit The EU unhindered, is something we voted to give up.

Yes to the Schengen - as long as your itinerary was not via UK

Yes but those rights were never fully applied in any case. To follow the letter of the law as it was (still is until December), a UK national should have been able to simply turn up at any EU border with their non UK/EU spouse and demand unfettered access.  In practice, airlines refused to let such spouses board without a visa and I have only read about one guy who arrived at a land border and was successful in gaining access for his spouse without a visa and apparently they were stuck at the border for hours first.

(Just to clarify that, without first finding the law again and spending hours reading it, I'm not sure if the actual law stated visa free or if a visa should be issued at the border on demand).

Then there's the issue of some Schengen states charging spouses of UK nationals for a visa - against the law but it happened.  The spirit of 'unhindered access' has never been fully applied - just an easier visa process with no requirement to prove income etc.
