The past few years have seen a number of countries that have made major changes to drug laws.  In your opinion, do you think Thailand should make major changes to laws surrounding illegal drug use.   Which of the following best fits with your opinion on what changes should be made.

I fully support the legalisation of pot, they probably will tax the hell out of it and try to bust large quantities still, like with tobacco (known as chop chop Australia). Legalisation of heroin, coke and ice creates a lot of issues, it should be decriminalised and not made legal until all the issues could be worked through.

If they make it, you should be allowed to buy it.

The war on drugs is not only pointless but extremely dangerous.

It creates hugely wealthy criminal gangs with the power to topple governments.

I couldn't agree more

This I whole heartedly agree on. Look at Mexico and other surrounding countries there and how they fully spread their little dangerous gangs into the USA.

Ah history rolls on. Cocaine was available at chemist shops in Australia until the late 1920's. Heroin was the drug administered for childbirth in Australia until the early 1950's ( US pressure put an end to that). Queen Victoria used to drink laudanum which contained opium or heroin before bed. Britain went to war with China because they would not exchange their tea for opium and wanted silver (hello Hong Kong) I don't have an all encompassing answer but plainly the prohibition is not working, just as alchohol prohibition in the US only succeeded in making organised crime fantastically wealthy. I personally think grass or hash should be available to those over a certain age (16?). Not familiar enough with the others to give a considered opinion, although I have had a line of coke and can see the attraction, and had a stumbling attempt at smoking in an opium den.

I'd like to legalisation, but also education. Some programs at schools that bring in addicts, recovered addicts, doctors etc to dispel the lies that authorities tell about drugs.

Any particular rat poison you'd recommend? Yes, the ongoing war on drugs is an epic fail!

No victim = no crime.

P.S. Should alcohol be criminalized?
— Yes, as alcohol is a highly addictive drug and a major health threat - apply the same laws to alcohol that is used with drugs.

google://percentage of homicide under influence of alcohol

= 30-50%

google://percentage of homicide under influence of drugs

= 5-10%

so shut up.

Edit:

> do you also advocate for stoned and drunk people driving around operating machinery and such?

sorry, didn't notice that phrase. Yes, people driving under influence of alcohol or operating machinery while drunk should face the same punishment as driving under influence of drugs.

28 % of Alcoholics voted to keep  Drugs Illegal , I think Alcohol should be banned , how many lives and Drama would be Saved , Why Alcoholics always hate Pot Smokers lol

I'd legalize recreational drugs, mainly to flush out criminals from the supply chains and to alleviate overcrowding of prisons. That people get locked up for nothing else than using is a travesty that needs to end.

Same as with alcohol, however, I would be tough on people who use drugs irresponsibly and who damage property or endanger others while under the influence.

NO way in 'ell  should more recreational drugs be legalised in Thailand. They cannot handle alcohol and kill 30,000 of each other on the roads mostly though alcohol related incidents.

More drugs, more deaths.

IF and I say IF they can act responsibly with alcohol and do so for a few years to prove it, maybe they can look at legalising others. But definitely not until then.

All the info is on the Internet Caveman

If recreational drugs are legalized, it would also be helpful to have places you can take them to be tested to make sure you’ve got what you thought you were paying for and has not been mixed with other stuff.

Legalise all so called recreational drugs, BUT refuse treatment for overdoses, all rehabilitation at user’s expense, accept the death rate and classify it as suicide,
Result will be drying up of supply, decreasing profits for distributors, reduction of burglaries by addicts, less Police time wasted on taking addicts and suppliers to Court where they receive laughable sentences.

Looking at the results of the survey I seem to be in the minority with these  views...

I went through a period of smoking pot when I was younger. It made me lazy, irascible, and distorted my thinking in a dark way for days after I'd last had it. It's not as benign as people say, and is as habit forming as booze or cigarettes.

The evidence coming in from countries such as Portugal and Sweden, who have decriminalised drug use, is that crime statistics are significantly down. The cost of production of the various materials used in drugs is very small, it's only their illegality which inflates their price on the street. There's also the benefit of the drugs not being adulterated with unknown materials in search of higher profits. Many overdoses are caused by the varying quality of what is sold.

Most senior police will tell you drugs are impossible to control, and they would be relieved to have the issue off their hands. The legal drug alcohol gives them enough of a problem to handle all by itself. I've never heard of stoners doing anything but lie around and giggle a lot.

The only caveat I have in terms of legalising drugs is any user committing a crime or screwing up somehow gets exactly the same treatment by the law or an employer as they would if they were stone cold sober. Their choice to inject, ingest or inhale.

The wars on drugs have always lost, legalise drug use, impose quality control, educate honestly on use and the dangers associated with different types of drugs, tax those selling/buying it and control distribution through legislation.

why even talking ? anybody with a brain knows that it will happen sooner or later !

I actually disagree, the same number of people will be addicts, less will choose alcohol as their drug of choice.

The whole concept of trying to control other people is wrong.

Let them do what they like to themselves.

Those who want control of other people 'for their own good' should also be arguing for control of others diet, sex, eating and exercise. Why just pick on one thing to control?

The most addictive drugs are the ones that should definitely be legalized.

So someone needing their fix will do anything to get it. The easier to get the less likely criminal behavior will result.

Regardless of the strategy and tactics employed over the years none have been effective in stopping or even significantly slowing drug use.

The obvious thing to do is to stop trying.

I never took any illegal drugs and I know they are harmful. But I still think they should be legal - or decriminalized. Because like people drink alcohol some people take drugs. Reality shows it's impossible to have no drugs. And as long as they are illegal its a huge criminal business with lots of money involved which means lots of violence involved. And then all the crime from people who "need" their drugs and do whatever it takes to get them.

Some time ago I read an article when the police confiscated a huge amount of drugs. A top drug expert was asked what the consequences will be. The short summary: Drugs on the street will be more expensive and for that reason there will be more crime for people to get money to pay for their drugs. Is that success?

And if drugs are legal then people can rethink where all the money could be spend which goes now into fighting drugs unsuccessfully. I am sure the money will be better spend to try to prevent people from wanting to take drugs.

drugs have created economic budget windfalls for law enforcement for decades, they will be very reluctant to lose that funding. Many 'legitimate' countries/businesses count on these somewhat untraceable funds to operate. imo there's just too much unaccountable  money at stake for the powerful for it to be legalized..
