webfact
Island collapse dumps 30,000 tonnes of rock onto Phi Phi national park reef By Tanyaluk Sakoot The section of the island that splintered off and collapsed broke into two pieces, plainly visible above water. Photo: DNP PHUKET: National park officers will seal off the area at one end of Koh Mae Urai, located between Phi Phi Island and the Krabi mainland, for safety after a large chunk of the island splintered off and collapsed into the sea, onto a coral reef. Chief of the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, Prayoon Phongphan, told The Phuket News today (Oct 21) that officers first noticed the end of the island, two kilometers southwest of Koh Poda (see map below), had “fallen off” during a routine patrol of the park last Friday morning (Oct 16). “The section broke into two large pieces, both clearly visible above the water. We estimate that the collapsed rock weighs anywhere from 30,000 up to 50,000 tonnes. Luckily no one was injured from the collapse,” he said. webfact
Strong winds break huge rock formation in Krabi’s Koh Talu island By The Nation Tourists are being warned to stay away from a rock in Krabi’s Koh Talu island that was split in half by strong waves. Prayoon Pongpan, chief of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, inspected the area on Wednesday. “The broken rock weighs between 30,000 and 50,000 tonnes, and the breakage damaged 20 per cent of the coral below the surface,” he said. “We believe the rock was broken by strong winds and waves brought by a storm last week.” He added that the island has a lot of cracks, which the national park will analyse to prevent similar problems in the future. “Tourists should stay away from the area as it is dangerous,” he added. So what are they going to use, maybe some super glue to keep it from cracking completely. For gods sake you can not prevent mother nature from eroding the coast line in Pattaya how for fruchs sake are you going to keep a rock from splitting. webfact
Krabi island: Pictures emerge of potential collapse before it happened Picture: Sanook Sanook reported that staff from the hat Nopparat Thara - Moo Koh Phi Phi national park in Krabi in the south of Thailand released pictures of cracks in Koh Talu taken before the island collapsed earlier in the week. About 30,000 to 40,000 tons of the island fell away into the sea in two huge chunks. This represented about a quarter of the island. The area is a popular dive site and people have been warned to stay away as there are more fissures in the main structure. The collapse followed heavy rains and storms, said the media.
