The visa amnesty is now over: Foreigners face fines and possible deportation for overstaying visas

Foreigners in Thailand are reminded that the visa amnesty is now over.

The amnesty, which was put in place to help foreigners stranded in Thailand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ended on Saturday.

Anyone who needed to renew their permission to stay in Thailand should have done so before the Saturday deadline.

Late last week, a spokesman for the Thai foreign ministry said that they had contacted all consulates and embassies in Thailand to remind them that their nationals who have not extended their visas are now in the country illegally as of yesterday.

Thanee Saengrat said that Thai government has been good to those that have been stranded in the kingdom since April issuing three amnesties and keeping everyone informed in English through the media and other means.

But it was now time to end the amnesty, meaning that foreigners either needed to extend their permission to stay in Thailand or leave the country.

From today anyone who is found to be on overstay will be fined.

People who do not seek to extend their visas after 90 days from now will be deported and blacklisted.

Thanee urged all those with expired visas to act quickly to either extend or exit the country.

The penalties for overstay in Thailand are as follows:

How will this affect the 60 day extensions that quite a few assumed would be an ongoing situation?

I 'assume' those with under consideration stamps will get approval until ?????? After that date what will be the procedure?

I see mass confusion coming up and tomorrow this will be a busy thread.

What harm are they doing except feeding the economy in some minor way?

Why cant people just do what they're supposed to do? Its not that hard?

If they want to deport them but cant they'll just lock 'em up 'til they can. That better?

This current extension, effective from 1 November is for "up to 60-days"

The shortest extension one can typically expect is 7-days.

Who's confused?

I'm confused. Ok so now let every government go for a tit for tat. Where is the love? Not that I fit into this category, but the multiple entry people are the ones who need a break.

It isn't Thailand's problem that your home countries can't sort out their problems.

Be careful what you wish for with that disdain for your fellow man. It won't be Thailand's problem either when it does a proper purge and put the squeeze on longterm expats - do you know the mind of the junta?  I hope folk are keeping this in mind and have a plan B. While I have genuine concern for friends, there is a morbid curiosity that would see the Thaier than Thai gone tropo type that likely can't read the alphabet or speak a lick out on their ear.

If only they were as proficient at rounding up the filthy, feral stray dogs as they are for overstaying foreigners.

I could only wish that the US government would apply the exact same rules to Thais in the US as the Thai government's own immigration policies for all of us.  It would be biblical - "Wailing and gashing of teeth" throughout the entirety of progressive liberal society.

I would applaud "tit for tat".

Comply, obey, fit in, "do the right thing", be a team player, wear a mask, social distance, participate in 2 minutes of hate, pick up a hoe and join Uncle Pol Pot and bashing in the brains of the bourgeoisie, join Father Jim with a Kool-Aide toast, conform....."just do what you're supposed to do.  It's not that hard.  Now finish your Kool-Aide and be quiet."

I think you'll find there are immigratiom laws in every country.  You be a rebel and tell us how you fare.

Good luck.

TAT doing everything they can with hair brain schemes to get foreign tourists. Thai Immigration doing everything they can to get rid of them. Typical Thailand. Left-hand has no idea what the right-hand is doing.

Foreigners who have been in Thailand for 8 months can hardly be considered to be tourists

They are breaking the law. They were given ample warning that the amnesty was coming to an end so if they did nothing about it they are idiots.

They should quickly buy a 10 million bht condo to stay longer !

I'd like to see the head of immigration and the head of the Thai Tourist authority get into a boxing ring to decide whether they want tourism to survive or not. The winner decides.

With very little prospect of getting any tourists here in the foreseeable future , where is the sense in hounding out the few that are still here spending money. The only result is less foreign exchange being spent here. How that profits Thailand is hard to imagine.

Before first lockdown people had enough time to get out from Thailand, but they decided to stay, so whose fault is it in the first place?

People who can't return their homeland now have already extended Visas, if not, they will end up to jail or deportation center.

What a load of rubbish, the USA are deporting loads of people, they even take kids from their parents and from over 500 kids they haven't got a clue where the parents are.
