Fed up with same old boring yellow folders, now you can change any or all your folder Icons into any Icon you want.

Any to Icon will convert any image or picture into an Icon (.ico) that you can use to jazz up your boring yellow folders.

For example if you have a folder full of puppy photos you change the folder to a picture of a puppy so it will be easy to find in a page full of yellow folders.

Once you have your Icon use Dr Folder to place the new Icon on the folder of your choice.

You can also change your drive Icons with Drive Icon Changer

To change the boring VLCPlayer traffic come Icon into something more exiting you can use VLC PLayer Icon Changer

Any to Icon

http://www.ahasoft.com/anytoicon/index.htm

Any to Icon 3.59 converts BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG, PCX, PSD, TGA, TIFF, WMF, WBMP, XPM, XBM and CUR formats into Windows icons. You can add files and folders from Windows Explorer or other file shells using drag and drop. You also can paste bitmaps from the clipboard and change color resolution and size to create customized icons. It's possible to convert 256-color icons into True Color icons and vice versa.

There's that, but why so little? Do it up right by applying a package system-wide.

BTW, for those of you who DARE, you cavemen, to change the Win 10 start menu back to something more convenient, there's an update to Open Shell now that gets its automatic updating feature working well.

That's  fine if you want to change all your Icons to sets they provide.

Many photo editors let you save in icon format!

If you are looking at your desktop with all your nice new icons, then you are not working.   LOL

The idea of Win UI customization really bothers our hardhat TVF Computer Experts, esp those proudly specializing in PC Lego.

If you spend a lot of time at your computer, however, the aesthetics can make it pass a bit more pleasantly, mitigating some of the UI annoyances, and even increase your productivity. Per this example, distinctive icons enable faster location of particular folders or programs.

There's much, much more, with the help of various tools, themes, skins . . . . The VLC player icon doesn't much bother me (so much as the Win 10 Start button, which I changed), and I have no icons on my desktop, but the overall VLC look does, so my VLC looks more like this:

Win UI customization has always been a little industry but really picked up steam with the advent of Win XP. Then there was Win 8, OMG.

If the user is organised, then he/she should know where all the folders are. I cringe when I see You Tubers and business presentations where all the desktop icons are pushed to the left of the screen, which just shows that they cannot be bothered to organise them properly. I like your comment that you have no icons on your desktop, I too have none apart from My PC at top left, Control Panel bottom left and Recycle Bin at bottom right. It looks good....to me. Other regularly used icons are on my task bar. I don't need a VLC icon as my music and movies automatically open it when I start a song or movie.

And to go one step further, I have moved all my Library Folders ie Music, Documents, Videos, etc etc to my One Drive Folder on a separate SSD, so I know exactly where everything is, and it is automatically backed up, AND available from my other PC or phone. I am not storing anything twice eg. in C:/users/.

All my 185,000 folders? That's (cough) quite a lot of organization, no?????

Commendable.???? Noobs: quickly delete most of that desktop icon pollution here: c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Desktop\ and c:\Users\Administrator\Desktop\ and c:\Users\Public\Desktop\.

Open Shell has the flyout Control Panel, quite convenient, and of course This PC.

Occasionally one wants to open VLC or other media player separately to play or create a playlist, or change its configuration. VLC can do a few other things besides play a file.

Yeah I've moved my Library folders similarly and a ton of lesser used portable apps to my data disk.

Now to win applause here for your mastery of advanced technology, you should just use the native Win 10 Start menu to organize everything. Here ya go, meet a Master:

Yep, can be done, I agree.????

I have a real life, however, so I can get to most things quickly via categories on a tabbed launchbar; the Win taskbar wouldn't cut it, though for near-instant access I do have a couple of dropdown menus there created via Free Launch Bar. Otherwise I use Total Commander for all the file management and have pinned tabs and toolbar icons there. Customized icons.???? I have Everything always running to find everything else.

But now your Start Menu looks just like a cluttered desktop.

Agreed. ???? Our "just use the native Start menu for everything" experts should realize the full implications of what that really means.

Why not just use the "change Icon" function in folder properties?

And I think that function exists already since over 30 years and Windows 3...

Thanks for this information. I am a happy caveman with Open Shell.  ????

I will bump my thread about making Windows 10 look like Windows 7 with this information.

I have just updated to the latest version, 4.4.162, but I don't see any check box for installing updates automatically.
