Thailand No Longer Top Overseas Destination for Chinese Tourists

Thailand has lost its spot as the most popular cross-border destination for tourists from mainland China, according to a survey by HSBC Holdings Plc, as neighboring Japan and South Korea moved up the list.

 

“Barring Hong Kong and Macau, Japan and Korea emerged as the top two preferred cross-border destinations,” analyst Parash Jain wrote in a report. “This reinforces our view that short-haul travel will recover earlier than long-haul international travel.”

 

The survey, conducted from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2, also found flight bookings are being made further in advance than they were pre-pandemic, which could reflect greater demand for leisure travel than business.

Oh this will just crush the poor Thais when they read about this or hear about it.  So much for the all you can eat prawn buffets.  Looks like it will be a rough ride for tourism.

Bit of a pointless story, the Chinese government is actively discouraging their citizens from travelling abroad.

 

Then again, the Thai government is actively discouraging tourist arrivals with all of the ridiculous loop holes people have to jump through to get here....

They need to quarantine when they return to China.

 

That essentially ended Chinese foreign tourism to everywhere.

 

It's the same situation in Thailand, how many Thais are going away on foreign holidays right now?

Well this is an interesting one.

 

As the Chinese have become more sophisticated, they demand a little bit more from their vacation destination.

 

They like to shop, but they aren't really the beach going Europeans

So the cost of shopping in Thailand is an issue.

 

It's like TAT knows exactly how to <deleted> off its target markets.

 

Shopping is expensive for the Chinese. Dirty beaches, sub standard hotels and customer service pisses off the Westerners

 

Go figure!

Lots of angry and bitter posts, BUT,  when everything is back to normal (as in pre-covid days), i am certain that the Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Malays etc. whom these posters hate will all be back and welcomed. Maybe in lesser numbers, but even a tiny percentage from their billions of citizens are enough to relegate farangs to the bottom of the preferred list.

TAT had better understand that it is going to take a tremendous amount of time before numbers ever turn back to normal.  It will not be the year after next either.  

So 2.5 is years from now it's anyone's guess what the industry will even look like.

How do the Thais market themselves in China?   Lived and visited all over China.  Never saw an advertisement.   Does Thailand expect others to do their advertising for them?  Kunming is a great city, only two hours from Bangkok.   No advertising in the airport.   No advertising anywhere in the city.  Thailand could be a million miles away by looks of the lack of influence.  It is probably the nationalistic, military government that just doesn't make people feel welcome.

I believe your a might confused. There is no anger or bitterness in the posts.  Why would you think there is.  It is a basic truth that the Bloomberg article has stated and the responses have been right on the money. Thailand has lost another group in which to fill their pockets

Well, Thailand should be happy, no? No more dirty, pesky farangs and irritating and uncouth Chinese to complain about. But I sympathise with those who make an honest living dealing with tourists - you know, the scammers, unscrupulous touts, the brown clowns etc. What are they going to do???

Not exactly rocket science to understand that short haul will be the most desired holidays for the next 12-24 months, purely for fear of new lockdowns, flights cancellations and new outbreaks. It might not be easy, but getting home from Spain to the UK is probably easier than from Thailand

I've seen fairs selling Thai products + quite a few Thai tourist t-shirts & met Thai students in Kunming, so I don't think it's quite that bad...
