Two runners fainted and died on Sunday during a campaign to encourage children to exercise in Rayong province.

About 1,400 runners participated in the 10-kilometre race in Pluak Daeng district at 6am.

The two male runners -- Narasit Sansompak, 54, and Sakan Janthiya, 30 -- fainted after running for four kilometres.

The paramedic team tried to save their lives but it was too late. Rayong Hospital will perform an autopsy to find out the cause of death.

This is sad and shocking. When I read the headline I assumed that they would be quite old men.

That's very sad news RIP

I wonder if they were regular runners or just turned up for the event?
Yes running can be deadly for people in poor health but otherwise its healthy to do sport.

Maybe they should do a medical checkup on all contestants before racing to avoid this happening again?

^I think like a lot of people that participate in these events (myself included), they just agree to turn up on-spec when family, friends, or co-workers ask for applicants to do these charity runs. Very sad for their loved ones.
