Western countries have a more developed news output. News time here is wasted on things that would never make news in the west. Crime stats are kept everywhere and are easy to research as many here only look at the news or word of mouth what happens and never hear most of what goes on here. -

Shocking Incident in Jomtien: Man Chases Tourist, with Large Knife
I remember in 2013 when taxi driver, Chidchai Utmacha, hacked American Troy Lee Pilkington to death with a machete over a 50 THB fare. Considering TIT, dude is probably back in Bangkok driving taxi. Media never follows up on these things. My guess is that whoever was wielding that machete and chasing the farang had murder on their mind.
