PHUKET: Phuket suffered its first death from a road accident for the New Year when a pickup truck struck a motorbike on Chao Fa West Rd in Wichit early yesterday morning (Jan 1), killing the 54-year-old rider.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Phuket) confirmed the death in its daily report for the Seven Days of Danger road-safety campaign this morning (Jan 2).

The report, for Day 4 of the campaign (Jan 1), marked one death and six people injured in seven accidents across the island yesterday.

Jesus. Wiped out from behind by a drunk pickup driver who was more than 5 times over the legal limit. This murderous driver should get banged up for life.

Another Buffalo in a pick up truck speeding and looking at his phone. Consequences for the Buffalo is to pay some money and get back driving like a clown again. Rinse and Repeat.

The full article, if you care to read it, indicates that the driver was drunk.

I agree , sentences for drink drivers are far too lenient in most countries . Should start at 20 years and add more years for the ages of his victims. The younger his victims, the longer his sentence

Even though they have indicated that the picture is from Google Maps, I would be a little peeved if that was my pickup in the shot.  I initially thought it was the accident vehicle.

How does the total death by traffic for 2020 compare with the deaths from Covid-19?

Not a hope that will be the first unless they had police every 500 yards round the island !

Maybe remove the "not" from the front of your username.

Don't think there is any relationship between the two ?

Covid carriers are unseen and unknown to those nearby and thus difficult to avoid while traffic accidents are quite easy to avoid !

No, but it makes Covid deaths look trivial in comparison with the highway mayhem
