Eight hundred businesses, NINE THOUSAND people thought to have cheated travel stimulus scheme

The level of corruption from top to bottom in Thailand has been laid bare in the fallout from the "Rao Thiaw Duay Kan" - "Let's Travel Together" stimulus scheme.

It was hyped up as a way for the Thai people to get a good deal on hotels and restaurants and stimulate domestic tourism after the first wave of the pandemic.

But it has turned into a nationwide fraud of epic proportions - some media has called it "Let's Embezzle Together".

Now the Thai police have decided that there are so many cases for them to handle throughout the country - from the biggest executives at hotels to the common man in the street - that it warrants a get together - at a Bangkok hotel.

Daily News reported that Royal Thai Police deputy commander Gen Damrongsak Kittipaphat has already directed deputies nationwide to attend a meeting at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Viphavadi Road, Bangkok.

The meeting will be opened and chaired by RTP chief Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk with the Crime Suppression Division explaining what needs to be done.

So far hundreds of restaurant and hotels and 9,000 people are in the crosshairs.

In addition to what has already been discovered, the  Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports is about to present evidence of fraud in 400 more hotels and 400 more restaurants.

After initial arrests of 50 people centring on Phuket and Chaiyaphum it has now been accepted that prosecutions will need to take place in every single province nationwide hence the meeting in Bangkok next week.

Thailand's PM Prayuth Chan-ocha famously said after assuming power that he was going to end corruption in Thailand in 20 years.

This is clear evidence that he has made little progress with endemic corruption still present at every level of the country.

Well at least we know how much longer he's going to try and stay in power. 20 years...sh-t.

Can Thailand take another 20 years of this incompetent, self serving a-hole?

How come they all didn't cheat - you mean it's not compulsory?

It's in the DNA. It doesn't  let some religious beliefs get in the way

Ah yes, government "schemes".

"Corruption, in Thailand? I'm shocked. Round up the usual (low level) suspects."

Interesting that some "governments" are overthrown for such malfeasance. Not so much with a military-ish government apparently.

Wait until the "Let's Go Halves" corruption is revealed.

Gotta love a country where corruption runs from the top to the bottom.  Wonder if this is a class taught yearly staring in elementary school.

In the phuket news they reported a 10 room hotel had thousands of bookings in one month.

How did they expect to get away with it?

Either not the brightest, or just the usual greed taking over.

Corruption in Thailand is the national pass time. It is part of the culture. Even those not involved, look away when confronted with it, such as special under the table payments to get anything done in a timely manner. E.G. Land Offices.

Not thinking to much.

How much.

Problem being, it's not seen so much as corruption , more as entitlement.

I am entitled to what you have so give it to me.  Does not sound like corruption but plain old theft.

Greedy  Buddhists ! They did'nt listen to Buddha, did they! :jap: Now off you get! Go to the temple and make some merit!

Reads like quite normal practice to me and will never change until they start locking folk up and selling off dodgy assets........:coffee1:

Well....they probably got a lot of "free" money.....getting it back to the government is a long and difficult process here......

Frankly, I thought these numbers were pretty low. I expected much, much higher.

I wonder if there is anybody I know?
