Robber snatches almost Bt1 million in necklaces from Koh Samui gold shop

An unarmed thief darted into a gold shop at Tesco Lotus in Koh Samui, grabbed 19 necklaces worth nearly Bt1 million from a display rack and swiftly disappeared through the department store’s rear exit. There was no report of any injuries.

Koh Samui’s Bo Phut police were alerted to the robbery at the Yaowarat Krungthep gold shop at precisely 11.34am on Tuesday and rushed to the scene.

The shop owner reportedly told them the thief – a man aged 35-40 years, tall and thin built, wearing black jeans, a blue jacket, a black and white cap and a face mask – stole the gold necklaces which weighed about 38 baht and cost almost Bt1 million.

There were only two of the shop’s staff and no customers in the store at the time of the robbery. The owner added that the thief did not brandish any weapon or talk to anyone.

CCTV footage showed that after leaving the mall, the robber jumped on a black Honda PCX motorcycle and sped away using a shortcut leading to Samui International Airport.

Police are now tracking the man and have set up roadblocks at possible escape routes.

Officers also said the suspect had dropped a bag containing an asthma inhaler while he ran away, so they speculated he might have asthma.

Maybe he was just inhaling for a friend?

Even so, the thief probably isn't breathing too easy right now, while the heat is on.

Koh Samui gold shop robber in custody in hours after he drops his bag containing ID

Police on Koh Samui were helped after a lone gold shop robber dropped his bag.

It contained his medications and all his ID.

Earlier Jomyut Srisuwan, 38, had been caught on CCTV loitering near the Yaowarat gold shop at Tesco Lotus.

He then vaulted the counter and stole around one million baht in gold jewelry before fleeing on a motorcycle.

But the dropped bag soon helped the police trace him and he was apprehended at a beach on the holiday island.

MCOT reported that the thief is from Songkhla in the far south and was a former staffer at a hotel on Samui who had lost his job due to the pandemic.

They showed him being arrested after a chase and being subsequently taken on a reenactment of the crime.

Note to self: Do not take ID with me when robbing a joint.

I take he only had one bag he dropped and not more?

'dropped his bags' would put an entirely different slant on this.

It's no excuse at all but I imagine many who have lost their hospitality jobs are really struggling financially at present.

Note to self do not take a joint before robbing a store!

A fool and his money are soon parted.

A gold shop on an island would be my last choice of gold shops to rob.

Lucky it wasn't an E-cigarette he'd be in real trouble.

Some people are not so clever.
