Pattaya’s reliance on foreign tourism must end, local officials told

The penny seems to have finally dropped for the resort of Pattaya and where it fits into plans for the development of the Eastern Seaboard.

A high profile meeting yesterday from the EEC commission indicated that reliance on foreign tourism has to end. Pattaya needs to become more of an economic entity in other ways to thrive in the future.

Pattaya is a key component in the government's plans for the EEC - the Eastern Economic Corridor.

While the pandemic has had a devastating impact on tourism in Pattaya it has also reminded those looking to the future that it has to move with the times and treat the pandemic as a valuable lesson.

Dr Khanit Saengsuphan of the EEC commission was in town to meet the mayor Sontaya Khunpluem , local officials and advisory groups, reported Sophon Cable TV on Facebook.

Key areas for discussion were the development of land and tourism areas in the city, the development of transport and drainage and water treatment works.

This was a meeting where the big issues were being looked at, issues fundamental to the future of Pattaya as a sustainable city and center of economic activity as well as tourism.

Dr Khanit sees the development via the Neo Pattaya initiative as vital. The reassigning of real estate areas and the increase in office buildings is key to attracting new economic activity.

Less reliance on foreign investment and less reliance on foreigners was the key lesson needed to be learned from the pandemic.

So rather than the 70-80 reliance on foreign tourism that there was pre-pandemic this had to be more like 50-50 in the future.

Sustainable and quality tourism were the watchwords for the future.

The meeting discussed plans to develop Old Town Naklua including the development of beachfront property in both the main Pattaya area and Jomtien.

Dr Khanit also heard the lastest plans and developments regarding transport and water management.

Thaivisa notes that the word coming out of Pattaya is that the old days when the place was seen as a tourist town mainly for foreigners is not necessarily over but rather just a smaller part of the future.

Pattaya is set to be more of an economic hub on the eastern seaboard where tourism plays its part but is not the be all and end all of economic activity.

Pattaya - helped by the guidance provided by the EEC schemes - finally seems to be waking up to reality and trully entering the 21st century.

Neo Pattaya - ridiculed by some online who only look to the past - should be seen as a viable and realistic way forward.

Such is the dislike for anything remotely farang, they will be willing to do whatever it takes to keep everything as Thai as possible.

Even if that means decimating the economy and forcing millions into poverty.

It's YOUR country innit boys, so do what you like.

I can't follow what this means?

I can understand '50-50' - (I assume) 50% foreigners, 50% Thais?

What about '70-80' - is that someone who failed maths?

Just ban foreigners from Pattaya lol

If there is a lesson like this to be learned surely it applies to Thailand as whole and not just Pattaya, how exactly do they plan on achieving this brainwave idea as reality sinks in of just how reliant Thailand is on foreign tourism - Pattaya is no different

I thought it was about the money? They forgot about it, because the officials get tax payers money anyway.

Maybe setup some steel and chemical industries? This way no foreign tourist would go there voluntary.

The goose had well and truly flown before Covid-19. Time to get over it.

So 20-30 per cent of businesses are expected to fail.

I wonder what kind of knock on effect that will have on things like condo sales and property prices in general?

A fair point....but that doesn't mean you mustn't still go all out and cater for for foreign tourists......surely they must realize this is not and either/or situation......eggs/baskets......No1 rule.....keep your options open.

leave it alone, it's wooden buildings are charming, looks good the way it is. The word 'develop' scares me in Thailand.., usually means tear it down.

Again - they got it all wrong.

Seems they want to eliminate foreigners from their equation

They should face it - Pattaya - Thailand -  became big, rich and famous

not because of their own effort, qualities, intelligence, honesty

but only because of the foreigners and their money.

Without that they would not have known what to do with their beautiful geography.

They would still be in their rice fields

I nearly consider wishing thaksin back

Hopefully they will not destroy it now

Not must, has. Don't know much about the EEC, but from what I can gather it's all a bit of a gamble, and tied somehow to China, and the Belt and Road initiative. Time will tell, I suppose, how viable it all is. Of historical interest only, as it's obviously now a bit dated:

'The Thai government approached the World Bank for funding, but was turned away as, in the eyes of the bank, the project lacked "economic rationality". '

(somewhere on the Net).

How true, I don''t think they quite realize how much Foreigners were keeping things ticking over. like sponsoring ladies and paying to educate  their children , buying house's and condos  , buying cars and scooters, buying business's , yes the  golden goose crash along time ago, Covid- 19 just finished it off ...Regards,,,,,Popa

Don't forget the park,  that's got to go too. A parking structure planned. Is the Naklua work going to be before the Pattaya beach walk renovation, again. These people are really thrashing around now.

yes that's alright, but every other resort is thinking the same so all tourists will not be heading for Pattaya.

Yep.  "Quality tourism" is going to save the day just like it is doing now. Look at all of those high quality tourist coming in by the droves on the STV visa.  All the wealthy, well heeled types are beating on the door to be let into Thailand!!!   Not.

"Sustainable and quality tourism ."  More magical thinking.
