(Reuters) - At least 15 people were killed on Tuesday in a collision between an SUV and a tractor trailer truck in Southern California, about 10 miles (16.1 km) north of the Mexican border, hospital officials said.

The crash, on State Route 115 near El Centro, California, involved a sport utility vehicle carrying 27 people and a truck hauling gravel, officials at El Centro Regional Medical Center told a news briefing.

Some 14 people died at the scene while another person died at the El Centro Regional Medical Center, the director of the hospital’s emergency room, Judy Cruz, said in the briefing, posted on Facebook.

Three patients were flown to other hospitals from the scene of the crash, and seven more were brought to El Centro. One more person died at the hospital, bringing the total to 15, she said.

Officials offered few additional details.

“The patients are going through a little bit of a difficult time as you can imagine,” said Adolphe Edward, chief executive officer of El Centro Regional Medical Center.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol told the Los Angeles Times.

An Imperial County Fire Department official told the Los Angeles Times that the agency responded to a mass fatality incident at 6:16 a.m. local time.

27 people in an SUV? That's beyond imagination....

I once crammed 18 people in an SUV to get them home after a party & all the other cars had left.... Didn't know how many until I was driving and asked

Every handling characteristic during that ride was abysmal - I took it slow & as safe as I could; all ended ok....

A couple of people had their legs go to sleep from the crammed positioning....

I cannot imagine another 9 people....

RIP to the one's that were lost....

With the stupidity of wide open borders  (perceived full rights to illegal aliens) the coyote runners have to be running full throttle cattle cars....

Tragedy....

My first thought was insurance scam.  They'll cram a bunch of people into a car, usually an old full-sized sedan, like a Buick, and then get in a fender-bender, and each comes out of it with their own whiplash lawsuit.  This sort of thing was popular in the San Jose (Calif) area in the 1990s, and a certain (nameless) immigrant group seemed prone to such situations.

But this incident is too daring for that.

a rare occurrence in the west, not so rare in Thailand, probably a weekly event here

RIP

@7 people crammed into an SUV made for 6 max? Smugglers probably or people going to work. Same same here. Unbelievable.

The vehicle had come through a hole in the barrier with the illegals. Seems there was a second vehicle with 19 illegals who also came through the same opening. Just wanted to update this.

Thanks for the link.  It's pretty obvious that the wall isn't very effective with a whole big enough to drive a vehicle through.

Sort of like saying cars are ineffective because they can break down. This section of barrier is old, it was cut, it didn't just fall down. It will always need maintenance, much like fences around home occasionally need fixing.

So, he builds a $2 Billion wall that doesn't work and costs a fortune to maintain?

Just a hint, but you can be assured that when people decide to cross the border, they will.  No wall will.  They haven't worked in the past and they won't now.

The wall in conjunction with a strong immigration policy is better than what's to come. Illegal crossings have skyrocketed under biden.

Much of the wall that was built was contracted under obama as well as rebuilding existing barriers.

Well, I see since you can't defend the wall, you've decided to deflect on to something else.   The topic isn't about Catch-and-Release, it's about a wall that is proving to be ineffective.  An expensive, ineffective boondoggle.   If it can be cut open enough allow vehicles to get through, imagine how easy it will be for people to get through.

No deterrent is 100% effective, but a 30 ft high barrier is better than a single strand of barbed wire. Wasn't a problem building barriers when obama was president. Oh the hypocrisy is staggering.

So now you have moved from a massively ineffective and expensive wall to a a barrier?   So the choices are a single strand of barbed wire or a wall?  Nothing in between?

27 ???

The most people crammed in a Mini (Classic model) is 27 and was achieved by Dani and the mini-skirts (UK) at the London to Brighton Mini Run in Brighton, UK, on 18 May 2014.

Can't get the picture to insert, the new record is 28.
