PHUKET: The dog that chased and bit a 15-year-old girl while she was walking to school on Tuesday must remain caged to prevent further attacks on people walking by, Phuket City Municipality Chief Administrative Officer (Palad) Chalermporn Piyanarongroj has announced.

The news follows Mr Chalermporn yesterday (Mar 11) holding discussions with the dog owner, who has been asked to be named only as “Ms May” since the incident, which left a bite wound on the girl’s left calf.

The discussion came yesterday as Mr Chalermporn and fellow Phuket City officials delivered one cage for the dog, a Bang Kaew breed which the owner has named “Khan Thong”.

Damned ridiculous, a dog that has bitten once will certainly do it again.

Putting it in a cage, is not only stupid but cruel to the dog, it should be put down.

One of my dogs will bite, it runs free around the property, but if anybody comes it is chained before we open the gate.

I am chased by dogs most of the time when I take a walk in Chalong. Bitten once (small nick) many years ago. I still had to go to the hospital.

Now I walk with a stick. The dogs seem to know what the stick is all about and stay away only barking. 

Dogs should not be loose. And they should be registered with a tag on a collar. Any dog loose without a tag should be picked up. And owners that have their tagged dog loose should be fined.

I agree, but why not put down on the spot? As there is an over abundance of dogs in the country, picking them up would be way too expensive, hence never carried out in this third world context.

Agree 100%. I was only referring to chasing dogs. Biut if it bites, it should be put down.

The dog became aggressive because it was always on a chain .

If somebody should be caged in this story , it is the owner of the dog .

Put a human being on a chain and see how long it takes for them to become aggressive ! It used to be done in centuries past and the results were never good. Still happens in Thailand. Have read many reports of families caging and chaining mentally ill relatives.

Would you let a bang kaew run free in your yard. A friend of mine has them and they need to be kept on a chain whenever people are around, and locked in a yard for the rest of the time. If you look at how the breed evolved you might understand they are an aggressive dog.

Putting them in a cage is a stupid idea, It will only make them more dangerous when free.

Dogs should be on a lead in public places, end of.

If not on a lead (for some strange reason) they should be muzzled....

Any dog not on a lead and not muzzled should be impounded......

The cost of "dog control" should be covered by introducing a dog license fee (mandatory education and  for stupid, ignorant owners would also be covered by the license fee). 

All dogs must be chipped and collared.

I have a retracting black metal stick from USA. Since I witnessed an attack by three dogs I carry it in the park everytime I go. The dogs take one look and back off.

There are many centers that capture and relocate soi dogs, why not do the same for this one. Why is the answer simply kill the dog?

Did you ever noticed that those who are afraid are mostly the ones who get bitten. I agree a dog in a cage will only make him more aggressive.  Those people afraid of dog should learn a little more about the dog language, the dog is showing his mood to you most of the time.

Interesting reading of the dog haters.

I have had two Bangkeows both of whom lived long happy lives.

They were never vicious, sure they were protective of the kids and my property but apparently that is one of the breeds characteristics.

I have seen many aggressive small dogs that will bite without much provocation and seen many a "Blue Heeler" in Australia that will have a go at you.

Dogs seem to reflect the personality of their owners and you can make any dog vicious, Proper training and socializing from a young age tends to stop aggressiveness in most dogs.

the problem with Bangkeows is that most Thais are scared of them and the owners do not train them properly and they are good at being dogs.

200 % Instead of trying to ignore, open your eyes next time when you meet a dog, observe the tail, ears, neck etc.  I'm even not a dog trainer but cycle regularly. Ask a professional dog trainer and he will tell you the same. They smell your fear.
