New passport procedure

So, I've been in Thailand continuously on a Non-O and about 4-5 years of marriage extension.  My latest one is through January/2022.  I have a valid reentry stamp.  I am now leaving on a trip to the US for perhaps 2 months.  I'm aware of the various hoops that will be needed to return to Thailand and quarantine etc.  My question has to do with my passport.  It doesn't expire until 2024, but it is getting fairly full with only like 6 blank pages.  I was wondering what the process would be to get a new passport.  Is it a good time to get a new one while in the US?  Can I enter Thailand on the reentry permit and marriage extension in the then cancelled old passport?  Would I go to Immigration and get them transferred to the new passport?  Would it be better to just make the trip on the old passport, then after returning, get a new passport while in Thailand and get the stamps transferred then?

Unless you pay extra to get your new US passport you might not get it before your return. Before it was about 6 weeks to get one by mail but now it will take 10 to 12 weeks. See: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports.html/

Since you are on a extension of stay the 6 pages you have now they would last still last for some time.

Best to get the new passport here later.

Yeah, when I was typing in my question I was sort of thinking it wasn't worth the hassle or risk.  As to the normal "new passport procedure", is it straightforward to walk into immigration with a cancelled passport and new one, and get the various stamps transferred?  Or would I travel with both passports until the new passport gets the extension next year?

It is very easy to have your stamps transferred from you old passport to a new one.

I would endourse ubonjoe's comment. 

 

I got my stamps transferred last Friday at Nakhonpathom Immigration office.  Arrived at 1pm and out the door with 4 stamps in my new passport in about 10 minutes.

 

No request form to complete but l had letter from Embassy plus prepaired copies of old & new passport pages.

 

Stamps = A transfer stamp detailing old passport number; A stamp indicating original visa type & date; A stamp indicating last entry; A stamp indicating current permission to stay.

 

Best of all NO FEE and nice smile when the IO handed my passports back.

 

The hard work now starts notifying all the other government bodies & organisations who have my old passport number as ID.... e.g. banks; driving licence; doctor/hospital; mobile phone provider; BTS & MRT card; local Amphur (yellow book & pink card) etc.  etc.

I'm assuming the OP has a US passport, and he has been dutifully filling his passport with stamps from front to back. He should be aware that the last few pages are different than the first "visa" pages. I was told a couple times by Thai immigration that this wasn't a problem, but I got denied entry not once but twice in Indonesia because I didn't have any more space in the visa pages, even though the last few pages were blank. They claimed they were not allowed to put visa stickers on those last "info" pages. The third time, I had to get a new passport early (before expiration) because of the lack of empty visa space.

 

So a word to the wise. Keep one visa page blank until the rest of the passport is all used up.

No need to notify them, unless you have too much free time.

You can get a new passport from the U.S. Consulate in Bangkok in less than two weeks after it arrives there. You fill out the application, submit it with photograph along with the old passport, and they will EMS it to you when it returns from the U.S. Mine was back in less than 2 weeks. You pre-pay the EMS charge in addition to the application fee. Easy-peasy. They provide a letter to Immigration explaining the deal.

Joe I know that for Canadian passports we can get extra pages is it not the same in the U.S. or did Biden screw that up also

They stopped doing additional pages 3 or 4 years ago.

Are you sure Canada still adds pages?

No my knowledge is dated as it was a few years ago that I got it.

Ubonjoe, I hope you are wrong on the time to receive a new passport. I just mailed mind today. US Embassy web site states 2 - 3 week and you can not pay extra for faster service when oversea.  My Extension is due 16 June, that's 14 weeks from now. Old passport was go till Mar 12 2022, but did not want to get only 9 month this June so sent for new to stop going two times IMO Bangkok.

Are you counting all of the pages remaining in your passport? When you look at the page make sure it is for visas.  When I switched from a tourist visa to a non-imm O visa here in Thailand back in 2018 I thought I had enough pages but in my US passport the last 3 pages are labeled as “Endorsements” and were not considered blank pages by Thai immigration.

Canada no longer allows extra pages to be added to passports unfortunately.

I was told 20 working days, but embassy said it is usually done in 10. So 2 weeks sounds right tho i would assume they may take longer if needed.

The wife and I just recently (in the past 3 months) renewed our US passports. The passports, after they were received by the passport agency, were completed and returned in about 5 weeks. However, I used regular priority mail with tracking and our passports sat in the Philadelphia post office for almost a month before being delivered to the passport agency. Knowing what I know now, I would use some type of expedited mail service and pay the extra $60 for the expedited passport service. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew.html

My how times have change 46 years ago when the young kid worked at the post office the only thing that got help up that long was the first edition of Playboy Penthouse et al.  They eventually got to the addressee but I will not discuss the condition.????????????

You can no longer have extra pages added to a US passport but you can request them for a new passport.
