Back to the USA later this week.

My airline has repeatedly said they do not require any COVID test to board. They don't care. But they have to see a "certificate" (Amusingly, they made a point of repeatedly (unsolicited by me) stating they do not verify the certificate ---- as if to hint, hint, hint just make one up) but they must see a "negative" report to allow boarding based on US requirements.

So, what is the latest on what type of test is required (PCR or antigen) and where to get it for returning to the USA later this week?

Either a pcr or antigen test is ok.  I will be shocked if they don't actually check it before you depart.  Everyone on my plane also had theirs inspected on arrival to the US when I returned last week.
