BANGKOK (NNT) - Royal Thai Police have added 191 to the COVID-19 hotline to support the busy 1668 and 1669.

Police General Damrongsak Kittiprapas, Deputy National Police Chief chaired a meeting with National Police Region 1 - 9, and related authorities via a video conference about using the 191 police hotline as a secondary COVID-19 hotline after 1668 and 1669.

According to the Deputy National Police Chief, there are around 1200 lines on the 191 hotline available 24hrs a day, to facilitate the needs of COVID-19 patients. However, 191 is positioned as a secondary line, and citizens are asked to call 1668 and 1669 before calling 191 as it is still mainly for emergencies and crime.

Anything put in place to help with the current situation is appreciated, good initiative.

'the 191 hotline available 24hrs a day'

Unless you live in Udon. The police won't answer the number at night. My family have called on two separate occasions to report suspected burglars. No reply.

I always thought 1669 was the emergency number for an ambulance? What if you urgently need one and the lines are busy?

That was my first thought. I have some other emergency but the lines are clogged up with COVID.

Rubbish! knee jerk reaction and you can rest assured it will not have been thought through, there will be poor liaison with the medical services and the call handlers will have received no extra relevant training, smoke and mirrors nothing more...

Too little, too late? I'll give you that.

Even if it turns out to not be the most efficient way (which is almost guaranteed), we can't just bash them for the sake of it. Granted, it is really not much and they have clearly missed the mark with containing the third wave. But when they try to make the situation easier for the people, they have my support.

call procedure for 191, first question - need police or need help for covid-19 ?

IF need help for covid-19, then ask whether 1668 or 1669 been called in the first place ?

IF not, please call 1668 or 1669 !

IF YES, will transfer the line to the 1668 or 1669 ????

A step in the right direction. Next, double or triple the operators and dispatchers on call.

Sorry mate I disagree but I do hope I am wrong

This like most proclamations from the eejits in charge is just another soundbite nothing more

In the real world you cannot just order something to happen off the cuff like all the little chiefs seem to believe

You need to train, liase and ensure the infrastructure is sound and adequate for the job then you to put standard operating procedures in place and ensure everybody knows what they are doing

In the three days or so since somebody realised there was only 20 lines for the covid effort for 69 million people do you honestly believe any of this has happened?

Stupidity and incompetence doesn't even begin to cover any of this, it's plain scary...

Again, I don't disagree with you on the fact that it is already too late and that it is not organized properly. But this can't be changed, so they might as well do some damage control now and hopefully it will help somehow.

And of course, it is time for them to finally be proactive in terms of measures and protocols to follow for any upcoming waves. But I won't hold my breath.

I agree. Having worked in emergency services (E9-1-1)/law enforcement, planning, training, equipment, written procedures, supervision and accountability are all parts of an effective system. Merely issuing degrees and knee-jerk reactions to crisis, are poor substitutes. I don't know if this is the case, but having lived here for many years and from past history, it's likely just words and wishes.
