As a 13 year prison visitor, the wisest words I ever heard outside a prison from a wrinkled faced old Thai lady was "This prison isn't full of guilty people. It is full of poor people." She was right.

i am surprised ,   a native of Phuket and not Myanmar ....

  • Well he confessed after they gave him "intensive interrogation" and it's been reported that he has lots of bruises on his body. So let's hope they do have the killer and not just some local loser they

When they got it right and got the right fella, they broadcast that too, but never said sorry for their original mistake.

Thais never, ever admit to a mistake as they would lose face. It becomes a misunderstanding.

Anywhere else in the world, the detention of a suspect for murder would mark the beginning of a detailed investigation, not "the end".

"In Phuket, we have good news. It's finished," police chief Suwat Jangyodsuk told reporters.

No due process, no trial.  Just - "It's finished."  Right.

Just saw the cctv pic, If I had just committed murder I don’t think that I would pull up on the wrong side of the road and look up at a cctv camera located high on a post, a bit sus.

The timestamp on the CCTV says "2021-08-03 10:01:12" so from before the victim entered the area.

"According to security camera footage, on Tuesday (Aug 3) she walked out of the hotel about 11.25am to Ao Yon beach. At 11.48am she walked alone on Ao Yon-Khao Khat Road towards Ao Yon waterfall...." (Victim's timeline)

Guilty until proven innocent.  "It's finished."

No at all .

The Polices job of looking for the suspect "is finished" .

The Police meant that their man hunt is over because they believe they have caught the offender .

There will still be a trail before a Judge and he will decide whether hes guilty or not

The Thai police are quite efficient as the community work with them. When living in Thailand I saw break and enters solved very quickly as there was always someone who saw something and they are happy to talk to the police. In the west people stay quiet…

Maybe he did, maybe he didn't commit this crime.

What we do know is there is a lot of pressure from government to solve this quickly with their failed sandbox scheme and bad publicity is seen as destroying the image of a main source of tourist income and bringing into question safety on Thai islands. My Thai family have never been keen on visiting Thai islands. I know they are gossip mongers without facts, but many times they have said they islands are just mafia controlled, and have no wish to go.

That is concerning.

Furthermore, the speed at which they are announcing this with just some footage showing he was on his motorbike in the area and no DNA back yet from Bangkok. They would carry more respect and less skepticism, if they say they are awaiting DNA and tests results, not blurting out ' Case closed '

I don't like Thai police confessions and I know for a fact that many of the horror stories are true. Plastic bags over heads to suffocate, attacking parts of the body other than the face, etc

Also I am dubious about the Police General who announces ' There is not a scapegoat in this case ' as if he knew he was going to be accused of it.

Do we all recall this being said about the Burmese two those years ago and it was anything but a clearcut case??, but once a Police General had announced it after a cursory walk around the beach days later at the crime scene, without any concrete evidence whatsoever, Prayut and all the others, closed their ears to any other options.

They then set about MAKING the evidence fit the crime.

Wasn't there supposed to be a 10AM press briefing. I can't find it reported anywhere. Where are all the pointy sticks and balaclava police?

The PM also put pressure on local police to “wrap up” the case quickly to avoid long and extensive attention to the case.

"It's finished."

Yeah,

and that is BAD, and encourages and pressurizes the local plod, with limited intelligence, to find a ' scapegoat '

I am not defending him, I will wait and hope the DNA is fairly done and conclusive. I just don't want an innocent man in jail and life ruined whilst the real criminal carries on regardless.

You are right, @Tropicalevo, but.. this is the face of the “innocent” woman.

So why exactly did you post her picture here?

Perhaps that was before the murder.

Sorry, but from those photo's I seriously doubt he's even 27 ! I'm near 60 and he looks older than me.

Unless he was on drugs at the time.

Unless he hadn't committed the murder at that time.

How many actually believe it's finished?? I think this poor sap is a patsy. Let's move on folks, move on, nothing to see here, nothing to see here folks, we got our man.

They looked at the local CCTV and saw the victim and also saw the suspect and they went to interview the suspect and he had suspicious scratches cuts and bruises on him and he confessed to the crime and they arrested him

Who do you think carried out the murder ?

Any word about DNA match yet? Rape? So presumably there's semen, it's highly unlikely the rapist managed to put on a condom during the struggle.

The reports say there was attempted rape but she fought back and this surprised the suspect and he killed her (suspect's account). He may never got his pants off...but his DNA is probably under victim's fingernails as he's reportedly pretty scratched up.

What do you base that "thought" on?

I suppose they have they ways right or wrong.Just like the english backpackers and the 2 burma boys now inside. It  does seem they found their man fast

I agree with your second paragraph.

As for the local "plod", they were there, but not running the show as in the Koh Tao murder case.

Quote from Phuket News:

"Senior, experienced police investigators were immediately dispatched to the island to take command of the investigation and ensuing manhunt. The task was not left to local police until it was clear that the task was beyond their capabilities."
