There is only one real town in Thailand! ????

10Km from the centre Chiang Mai, all the facilities of a big city. With the mountain views and jungle of a rural environment. The only con being dense smog for 2 months of the year.

Here is one more of the sleeping lady.

I'll get straight in with "and you would like to know why exactly?" before the Usual Suspects do.

We are in Sam Khok.

Pro.  Within easy striking distance of BKK CBD but still sufficiently rural to be green.

Con. From us it's 4km to the nearest Seven.

Some clues as to what you desire would be nice, beach, jungle, hills etc etc.

Chiang mai, Nong Khai interest me. Friendly locals, food, airport. Rural plus city nearby. Driving options on weekends.

Hat Yai

Not too small, not too big

Cosmopolitan city with a relaxed feel

Good food, plenty of variety, including some good western restaurants**

Lots of shops with western comforts available

Nightlife is good, plenty of live music venues**

Good connections to Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur**

Only 45 minutes to the border if you need to escape

Songkhla and the beach is about 50 minutes away

Air quality is generally very good, and coastal breezes keep the temperature from extremes

Only negative is the rare terrorist attack.

(** fingers crossed that remains so post Covid)

I would love to hire a car and drive from Trang to Chiang Mai via the Mekong. Great trip. Take 2 months.

Never spent any great amount of time there, a lot smaller, a lot older, pleasant enough but I don't think I'd want to live there. Flight connections are more limited as well.

Ok thanks. Hat Yai sounds good. Close to islands as well. Trang is a nice town, bit small though.

Indeed, it's handy for the west coast too. We often go to Koh Lanta or resorts between Trang and Krabi. Phuket's a bit more of a chore to get to, though you can always fly, Bangkok Air fly Hat Yai to Phuket (or did pre Covid).

No. No a bit too big. They have traffic lights there!????

Oops. Town or province. Always difficult here when the city has the same name as the province.

Make your way to Wang Chomphu. Canoe about 5km upstream through the S-bends. When you see a hollow log, hit it three times with a stick and you'll be greeted by the village chief. Offer the secret wai and he might let you in.

You should consider a boat.
